"A very well-maintained Silver Shadow. Beautiful paint and interior with minor signs of use."

Description

When Rolls-Royce launched the Silver Shadow in 1965, it marked a significant technological shift compared to earlier models like the Silver Cloud. For the first time, the traditional chassis construction was abandoned in favor of a modern, self-supporting monocoque body. The Silver Shadow featured advanced technical solutions, including disc brakes all around and a sophisticated suspension system.

The open version was initially called the Silver Shadow Drophead Coupé and was built by the coachbuilder Mulliner Park Ward in very small volumes. It was designed for an exclusive clientele, with each example hand-built according to the customer's specifications.

This particular car has been owned by the current owner for 20 years and has been part of the family’s car collection. During this time, it has always been stored in a heated garage and received regular service. The car has only been driven about 1,200 km during these years. When the current owner purchased the car, the engine had recently been overhauled.

The paint is in good condition—not perfect but definitely not bad, showing signs of age. There are also some inconsistencies in the paintwork on a section of the hood. Two years ago, the car was given a "racing stripe" and the hubcaps were also touched up. At the time of the photoshoot, there was a small pool of gearbox oil under the car. This is quite common with older cars of this vintage, especially since it’s been a while since the car had a good warm-up out on the roads. The owner is aware of this and has made sure to top up the oil as needed.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition

Easy to start. The engine runs smoothly, and the automatic transmission shifts as it should. The braking system is also functioning properly. It was never confirmed whether the car has hydraulic soft top mechanics, but the soft top works perfectly and can be raised and lowered manually without any issues.

  • Interior condition

Very nice interior, especially the wood veneer. The leather upholstery shows small signs of dryness, as seen in the pictures.

  • Exterior condition

The Rolls has a beautiful paint job. Some unevenness can be seen on a section of the hood, as shown in the pictures. The body is in great condition, with straight panels and even panel gaps. It also looks good underneath. The chrome work is in excellent condition. The soft top is in good shape, with a small loose stitch, as shown in the picture.

  • General condition

A Rolls-Royce in good working condition. It’s in excellent, presentable shape and functions well, ready to be enjoyed.

Facts about the model

With a long tradition of custom-built bodies, the Silver Shadow was introduced in 1965 with a self-supporting standard body. The Silver Shadow became the bridge between the old and the new, but it sold better than any previous Rolls-Royce model. In 15 years, more cars were sold than Rolls-Royce had managed to build since its inception in 1904.

The development behind the Silver Shadow was extensive, resulting in one of the world’s best cars at the time. While the engine and transmission were the same aluminum V8 as in the Silver Cloud, now paired with a GM automatic gearbox, the rest of the car was newly developed. With hydraulic self-leveling suspension, independent wheel suspension, and disc brakes all around, it was a highly advanced and technologically sophisticated vehicle.

It took a long time before the Silver Shadow was modernized. The Silver Shadow II was introduced in 1977, with new features like rack-and-pinion steering and the option for a longer wheelbase. Production continued until 1981 when the model was discontinued. However, the cabriolet version, the Corniche, continued to be built until 1996.
