SAAB 900 Turbo 16v Cabriolet — 1990

Saab’s contribution to the convertible class quickly became both a success and a style icon. This is a Swedish-sold example with few owners, a well-preserved freshness, and an unusual detail—a block heater from Volvo Aero (Volvo Flygmotor AB).

"A well-cared-for convertible that feels both lively and fresh."

Description

This car comes with a certain provenance – originally delivered in June 1990 to Pia and Peter Althin. She was an entrepreneur in the finance sector; he is well known both as a lawyer and a former Member of Parliament. In 2001, the car changed hands and has had two owners since, before returning to Skåne 15 years ago. It has served as an enthusiast vehicle for most of its life, and it clearly shows signs of careful use. In the past 10 years, it has been driven less than 20,000 km.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition

“Exemplary” is a fitting word to describe the technical condition. The car feels lively and responsive on the road. A stainless steel exhaust provides a slightly sportier tone than stock. All gauges function properly, and all other electrical components work to satisfaction. Under the hood, everything is in tidy, presentable condition—and the first thing you’ll notice on the right side is a rather unique detail: a block heater designed by Volvo Flygmotor in Trollhättan, functioning much like an Eberspächer system.

The car does not have A/C—but then again, few convertibles were likely equipped with a proper engine heater like this one.

  • Interior condition

Bright, fresh, and inviting interior in exemplary condition. There are a few small bubbles on the glove compartment lid—a typical quirk of the Saab 900—but otherwise, the leather and seats are in top condition. The door panels are intact with no separation, and everything has been well maintained. A few minor spots can be found, but there’s no significant wear to speak of. The Nardi steering wheel is believed to have been fitted from new.

  • Exterior condition

Very nice bodywork and paint throughout. Rubber seals and weatherstripping are in good condition, and the rear spoiler remains soft and intact.

The soft top is in excellent shape, with a few small repairs—typical wear from being folded down. Both types of convertible boot covers are included: the vinyl cover and the hard three-piece plastic cover, both still in their original storage bags.

Recently, a set of NOS Aero wheels with brand-new tires were installed—mint condition.

  • General condition

It’s clear that this car has been in the hands of enthusiasts for many years—carefully driven and consistently well maintained. A truly fine example with solid documentation and the right engine: the sought-after 16-valve turbo paired with a manual transmission.
