"When terms like “sports Beetle” or “hay blower” are used, they are often expressions of a certain distant admiration — because few things are tougher than truly using and enjoying a Porsche 356 as an enthusiast’s car. And doing so with the very earliest model years, the ones known as the Pre-A, commands even greater respect."

Description

It was delivered to its first owner, farmer Sven Viktor Söderberg of Väppeby outside Enköping, by the Swedish distributor Scania-Vabis, Volkswagen Division in Stockholm, in November 1954. The warranty certificate is signed by C.G. Hammarlund — a successful Porsche driver who was also employed by the dealership at the time.

Among the extensive documentation accompanying the car, which includes many fascinating photographs with handwritten notes, there is even a picture of Söderberg’s farm. The odometer has reportedly been out of operation for at least the past 10–12 years, during which the recorded mileage at inspections remained at 65,850 kilometers. These figures relate to a later replacement gauge cluster from 1959 that had been fitted by a previous owner. However, a former owner had the original instruments restored a couple of years ago, and these are now reinstalled in the car. As a result, the odometer currently reads 52,590 kilometers. Altogether, the car’s total mileage is said to be approximately 160,000 kilometers.

A few years ago, the current owner had his eye on another example that was unavailable at the time. Instead, he was offered the opportunity to purchase this auction car. Circumstances and opportunities have since changed in favor of the original car he first sought, and therefore ADA151 is now being offered at auction.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition

Everything functions well, reflecting the quality for which the marque would soon become renowned, even though the car has naturally been restored and maintained continuously over the years. At some point, the engine was replaced with a correct unit from the same model year. The brakes have been refurbished with new components by the current owner.

  • Interior condition

The leather seats are in fine, fresh condition and were reupholstered in 1998 according to notes found in the accompanying photographs. The current owner has further refined the interior by fitting new carpeting throughout the cabin, as the old carpets inevitably carried a certain aged odor.

One particularly charming detail is that the dashboard still retains its original paint finish — it has never been restored or refinished.

  • Exterior condition

According to the documentation, the car’s original color was the same Azure Blue shade it wears today. Among the photographs in the history file are pictures from its years painted red — most likely taken in the late 1950s — as well as images showing the car in its original color carrying the old Swedish registration prefix “C.”

The paintwork is nevertheless presented in attractive and presentable condition, with a few small paint bubbles remaining from the previous restoration carried out in 2006. There is some patina here and there, and details such as the door handles show small specks and pitting in the chrome.

  • General condition

An extensively documented history accompanies a car that has lived its life as a moderately used and joyful sports car. It presents itself in beautiful and functional condition, with just the right amount of patina and confidence to encourage frequent driving rather than static display.

There is also a very active dedicated club for these early models — Porsche 356 Club Sweden — where enthusiasm runs deep for this sporting and air-cooled chapter of the marque’s history.

Facts about the model

The Porsche 356 Pre-A — or simply the Porsche 356, as it was originally known — is the model that laid the foundation for the entire success story of the Porsche marque. The story began in an old sawmill in Gmünd, Austria, where Ferdinand “Ferry” Porsche constructed the very first cars between 1948 and 1949. These early examples featured hand-formed aluminum bodies and were largely based on modified Volkswagen Type 1 engineering.

In 1950, production moved to the Zuffenhausen district of Stuttgart, where series manufacturing began with steel bodies produced by coachbuilder Reutter. It is the cars from this period, up until October 1955, that retrospectively became known as the “Pre-A” models, distinguishing them from the later A, B, C, and subsequent generations.

During these years, the model evolved rapidly, and the small flat-four engine steadily increased in both size and power. From a design perspective, a Pre-A is most easily recognized by its taillights and windshield, which was either fully split down the center or featured a sharply bent center section in the glass — the so-called “knick-window.”

The model was offered as both a coupé and a cabriolet, as well as in the stripped-down Speedster version that became an enormous success on the American market. By the time the successor, the 356 A, was introduced at the end of 1955, the Pre-A had already established Porsche’s core philosophy of lightweight construction, aerodynamic efficiency, and timeless sports car design.
