"Few Beetles are found in this condition. The car performs fantastically in every mechanical aspect, and it shines beautifully in its lovely green color. A must-have for the dedicated VW enthusiast. This is a car we hope will end up in the right hands — someone who truly appreciates preserving its unique condition and rich history."

Description

The car “Sofie” was purchased by Per-Olov Johansson in Rätansbyn on April 26, 1957. It was delivered by AB Berner & Co in Östersund. Olle, who had recently obtained his driver’s license, was the car’s primary user.

The car was equipped with four-point seat belts, as well as, sometime later, a lock for the gear lever. This lock was purchased for the sum of 47 kronor and 10 öre. Gulf service records document maintenance visits from when the car had covered approximately 6,000 km up to just over 100,000 km, meaning the odometer has rolled over once.

In 1998, Olle passed away and the car was inherited by his niece, Ann-Sofia. At that time, the car had traveled approximately 138,000 km. She had a friend who worked within Volkswagen, and one day he borrowed the car, later returning it with a fresh repaint in its original factory color and a rebuilt engine.

The current owner purchased the car from Ann-Sofia in 2012, when the odometer showed 143,920 km — meaning the car had only been driven around 6,000 km since the restoration work. Included with the car was an extensive collection of documentation, a roof rack, luggage rack, roof luggage bag, and much more.

More of the car’s history can be found beneath the photos, where you can also read about how the car became a “movie star” in one of Dagmar Lange’s detective stories. As a charming detail, the car is equipped with an EP player along with a Volkswagen EP record. Additional details can also be seen in the photos.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition

The car runs wonderfully and feels almost like new to drive. All technical functions operate as they should. The reverse gear can occasionally slip out, in which case the gear lever needs to be held in place. As mentioned earlier, the engine has been rebuilt.

The car received its final inspection exemption in 2017, meaning it no longer requires periodic inspections. The vehicle has not been inspected on a lift, but we have no reason to believe that its condition underneath would be poor — something also emphasized by the owner.

  • Interior condition

Very little to remark upon. There is minor wear on the driver’s seat backrest, as well as on the entry area of the floor mat. The vinyl upholstery is in fine condition, and it is likely that the car has been used with seat covers throughout its life.

  • Exterior condition

Externally, there are two minor scratches on the engine lid, most likely caused during the installation of the luggage rack. There is also a small dent on a trim piece on the driver’s door, along with a few minor stone chips.

  • General condition

What more can be said other than outstanding, fantastic, and impressive? This is a car that inspires desire and draws great interest wherever it goes.

Facts about the model

Volkswagen (VW) was founded in 1937 and experienced rapid growth during the 1950s thanks to the success of the Volkswagen Type 1, better known as the Beetle. In 1957, the company increased production to meet growing demand both in Germany and internationally. At the same time, Volkswagen began expanding globally by establishing factories and partnerships in other countries.

During the year, new versions of the Beetle were also introduced, including models with larger engines for improved performance. Volkswagen placed a strong emphasis on quality and reliability, further strengthening the brand’s reputation and customer loyalty. The company also continued to develop its marketing strategies, which later resulted in the famous “Think Small” campaign in 1959 that made the Beetle hugely popular in the United States.

In summary, 1957 was an important year for Volkswagen, characterized by increased production, international expansion, and continuous improvements to the company’s vehicles — developments that laid the foundation for Volkswagen’s future success in the global automotive market.
