Mechanical condition
Starts and runs well; during a short drive on a smaller road, it performed nicely. It hasn't been inspected on a lift recently, but a mechanic has previously gone through the car. There is rust that needs to be addressed—primarily in the wheel arches and sills on both front sides. There is also rust in the front subframe on the right-hand side.
-
Interior condition
Original interior with signs of regular wear. Seat covers have been used—gently removed on the driver’s seat, where wear is visible. Door cards have speaker holes, currently covered with wooden panels. Carpets and headliner are in good original condition. Steering wheel, controls, gauges, and dashboard are in good shape. Electrical functions are working, though the clock’s functionality is uncertain. Rubber seals are in decent condition.
-
Exterior condition
Repainted either fully or partially. Front fenders are plastic. There is rust in the lower edges of the wheel arches and sills, as well as signs of rust around some trim areas. The short lower trim pieces on the front fenders are missing. Glass, trim, and emblems are in good condition with some patina. Lighting components are in good shape. Engine bay and trunk are in original condition with signs of wear and some rust. There are paint residues on the rubber seals. Wheels and tires are in acceptable condition.

General condition
A charming little 02, which was the entry-level model in BMW’s lineup at the time. This car should be considered a running restoration project, where the new owner can decide the extent of work to be done. The compact 02 series is a sought-after classic and enthusiast vehicle.

Facts about the model
By the mid-1960s, BMW realized they also needed a smaller car to meet the growing demand from the expanding middle class. From the successful Neue Klasse, they developed a new, more compact model. Initially fitted with the 1600 engine from the larger car but featuring a two-door body, it was simply named the 1600-2. The rest is history—and a success story.
Eventually, the "2" was incorporated into the model names, and the cars became known as the 1502, 1602, 1802, and 2002, depending on engine size. A range of different variants and suffixes were introduced based on trim and features. Two-door sedans, cabriolet versions, and a two-door Touring model were produced—and as the crowning touch, a turbocharged version was launched in 1973.
The 02 Series was produced until 1977, with minor cosmetic updates along the way. Like many other cars of the 1970s, the model gradually lost its chrome and gained more matte black trim details. For the 1974 model year, the classic round taillights were replaced with larger, more modern rectangular units.
Regardless of engine size, the 02 Series was a lively and fun-to-drive car with excellent handling characteristics. Drivers with sporty ambitions loved the model—as did racing enthusiasts. In the final two model years, only the simpler 1502 version was offered, positioned as a budget-friendly alternative to the newly introduced 3 Series in 1975.
A total of 868,000 BMW 02 Series cars were produced between 1966 and 1977.
