"A rare and well-preserved example of the model, offering excellent potential for enjoyable, mindful use and long-term preservation."

Description

It was delivered by the then Lotus dealer Wendels in Malmö to its first owner in July 1988, who cared for the car for over 30 years. It was kept in a heated garage the entire time until it was sold to a collector in Djursholm, just outside Stockholm. However, after a short while—and without ever driving it—the new owner found something more appealing at Auto Classica in Ystad, and the Lotus was traded in.

The current owner was actually on the hunt for an early Porsche 911 when he came across the Esprit and found it both interesting and fun. However, he soon developed a kind of "usage anxiety" due to the car’s extremely low mileage, which is why it hasn’t seen much road time in his ownership either.

At the 2009 inspection, the car had 10,430 km on the clock. Today, it shows just 10,800 km, and the original delivery tires are still fitted. The most recent approved inspection was carried out on 2025-05-20.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition

It has recently undergone a minor service, including an oil change, new spark plugs, and a general check-up, along with a passed inspection. In preparation for the season, the car has seen more use than usual compared to previous years, and mechanically it feels lively and well put together. The little that can be seen of the mid-mounted engine looks clean and dry, with nicely painted red details.

  • Interior condition

Stylish, unworn, and untouched original interior that has been well preserved—this also applies to the rear luggage compartment and the front storage area, which includes the spare wheel, master brake cylinder, fire extinguisher, and fuse box, all of which appear nearly new. Period-correct Alpine sound system in working order.

  • Exterior condition

Original paint in excellent, near-new condition, overall very presentable and attractive. Even underneath around the engine bay, the car is pleasing to look at. The older Goodyear Eagle NCT tires still have good tread, but they are nearly 40 years old.

  • General condition

Even though this example is best regarded as an exceptionally low-mileage representative of the model—and it’s perfectly understandable that an owner would want to preserve that—it still benefits from being driven a few miles each summer in good weather. Doing so helps maintain both its value and the functionality of this fun and engaging mechanical machine.

Facts about the model

The 1988 Lotus Esprit Turbo HCPI (High Compression Petrol Injection) belonged to the third generation of the Esprit model, introduced in 1987 with a thoroughly revised design of the original 1976 body. The Turbo HCPI variant featured a 2.2-liter turbocharged engine with fuel injection and higher compression (8.0:1 compared to earlier models), producing around 215 hp. This allowed for 0–100 km/h acceleration in approximately 5.4 seconds and a top speed of around 250 km/h.

The increased compression was made possible by an upgraded Bosch KE-Jetronic engine management and fuel injection system. The car served as a transitional model before the launch of the even more advanced SE (Special Equipment) version in 1989.

The HCPI offered improved fuel economy, better throttle response, and a more refined driving experience compared to earlier Turbo Esprit models. It featured a new, rounder and more aerodynamic body design, a partially galvanized chassis, and upgraded suspension and steering. It was also one of the last Lotus models produced before General Motors acquired the company later that same year.
