Description
In the autumn of 1999, the car was placed in a heated garage and put up on blocks. Unfortunately, during that time, it dropped out of the registration system. However, it was brought down from the blocks ahead of the 2020 season and re-registered with a vehicle inspection and a new registration number.
Older registration documents are believed to exist somewhere—the current owner is still searching for a box that came with the car. A written story from the previous owner does exist, detailing the car's history, including the trip through the Soviet Union via the North Cape and back. The latest and last approved inspection was completed in connection with the re-registration in 2020.
Technical data
Condition
-
Mechanical condition
The engine is the factory-original unit—car and drivetrain have matching numbers, to use the international term. After some initial challenges, the cylinder heads were refurbished and a new fuel pump was installed during the first season after the long storage, in 2020. Today, the engine runs smoothly and reliably, along with the gearbox, brakes, and steering—all functioning well.
-
Interior condition
Well-preserved original interior paired with a clean and fresh rubber floor mat.
The headliner is also original, showing typical marks and discoloration for its age.
The condition and wear on the seat upholstery suggest that protective seat covers may have been in place since the car was new—a common practice at the time. -
Exterior condition
Original paint with a few touch-ups, dents, and scrapes—primarily on the right rear fender, following an incident while reversing the car into a garage. Repairing the fenders is a relatively simple task and would significantly enhance the car’s appeal for most enthusiasts. The door-mounted mirrors from a Saab 96 are both practical and, unless one is a particularly purist VW Type 1 enthusiast, they actually suit the car quite well.
-
General condition
Nice and fully functional—the fenders’ need for repair does not detract from the overall driving experience. In fact, they’re part of the car’s provenance and history. That said, they are also relatively easy to fix if one wishes to restore the exterior further.
