AMC Rambler Gremlin V8 — 1970

The AMC Gremlin is a quirky and rare car, with only around 35 examples in Sweden. It was America’s answer to the rising popularity of smaller European cars—though thankfully, they kept the V8. Even today, it would leave most GTI cars in the dust in a straight line.

"Everything about this car has a unique feel—not just its distinctive design, but also its special edition Levi’s denim interior and the rumbling V8 under the bonnet. It feels like a true sleeper from the 1970s, but the moment you hit the gas pedal, you’re flying down the road. Sharing the same racing colors as the Javelin in this auction, it has earned the nickname "Pit Car.""

Description

This car was first registered in Sweden in 1970 and has had a total of four owners, with a history of long-term ownership. The current owner purchased it in 2020 and set out to make it a tribute to the Penske racing team. Unsatisfied with its worn-out V8 engine, they replaced it with a strong Chevy 327 V8, paired with a GM 350 automatic gearbox. To handle the extra power, the car was also upgraded with springs, improved brakes, and a new exhaust system. Once the mechanical upgrades were completed, the body—already in solid condition—was repainted in the same red, white, and blue colors as the iconic Javelin, becoming the team's ‘Pit Car’ at racing events.

The best part? When the car passed its final inspection, it was officially registered with the upgraded engine. It's a thrilling car to drive—no one would ever guess there's a powerful V8 under the hood until you hit the gas and leave them standing."

Condition

  • Mechanical condition

The car has been professionally built and upgraded to handle the increased power, estimated at approximately 225 hp. It drives like a regular car, starting easily, with a smooth-shifting 3-speed automatic gearbox, solid brakes, and good road handling. It is inspection-exempt forever and ready to drive home.

  • Interior condition

Interior is unique—it's a Levi's Special Edition and even retains the original Levi's tag on the driver’s seat. It is amazingly well-kept, completely original, and free from damage, with only minor age-related wear. The rear vinyl panel and the carpet in the boot have some marks."

  • Exterior condition

Bodywork is straight and clean, with no visible damage or rust, and the underbody is also clean and tidy. The paintwork is bright and well-maintained, with no major issues. The chromework is shiny, though there is some oxidation on the bumper and around the rear lights. The only noticeable remark is a small rust spot on the front inner seam of the driver’s door (see pictures)."

  • General condition

If you're looking for something unique, thrilling to drive, and guaranteed to stand out at every car show, this is the one to buy.
