"A historically and ethnographically interesting car model. This particular example was used as a display vehicle at a GM dealership in Visby during the 1980s to showcase Opel’s long automotive heritage.

We have not had the opportunity to test drive the vehicle. We believe that a reasonably skilled mechanic should be able to get the simple 1930s technology running relatively quickly, but we do not know exactly what work may be required."

Description

The car was refurbished with a new paint job and reupholstered interior in the early 1980s. It was then used as promotional material for the GM dealership Bilhuset in Visby, where the Kadett was often displayed in the showroom window.

According to records in the vehicle registry, the Kadett requires a registration inspection, as it is only pre-registered—a common practice in the 1980s, often done while awaiting the completion of a restoration.

According to the Swedish Transport Agency, the car has had three registered owners, all within the same family. The current owner inherited the car from his father, a well-known entrepreneur and car enthusiast who owned several collector vehicles. The car has been part of the family collection since 1985 and has been used as a promotional vehicle. The heirs have now decided to sell the car and hope it will go to someone with more time to devote to it.

The car comes with a spare wheel (mounted externally at the rear). The original jack and instruction manual are missing. There is only one ignition key, and the functionality of the door locks is unknown.

This is a remote auction. The images and information regarding the car and its technical condition have been provided by the owner. BWA has therefore not conducted an on-site inspection.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition

Equipped with a 1.1-liter (1,074 cc) inline four-cylinder side-valve engine. Output was rated at 23 hp, and with the three-speed manual gearbox, the car was capable of speeds of around 90 km/h. It features hydraulic drum brakes and a 6-volt electrical system.

We do not know when the car was last started; it has been stationary for many years. It is known to have been driven in the early 1980s. No attempts have been made to start it prior to the auction. The owner has tried to turn the engine by hand, but the fan belt slipped on the pulley, resulting in an inconclusive outcome. Therefore, we do not know whether the engine turns freely or is seized.

The car is missing a starter battery and requires a full technical inspection and service before any attempt is made to start it.

  • Interior condition

The interior was reupholstered in the 1980s. Some areas show damage, which we believe was caused by rodents while the car was stored in a garage. Please see the photos.

  • Exterior condition

Repainted in the early 1980s. The paintwork is of a simpler quality but has stood the test of time well. There is paint wear below the rear window and on the top of the right front fender—see photos.

It is fitted with 1960s cross-ply tires that have been equipped with new inner tubes. Hubcaps are missing.

  • General condition

The car appears to have a solid body with older paintwork and an interior in usable condition. If the intention is simply to include it in a collection or display it in a museum, no work is required.

However, if you wish to drive it, you should expect to carry out a technical inspection of the brakes and drivetrain, along with general servicing and a registration inspection.

Owner's comment

New information was received on March 23, 2026. The owner has now found a certified copy of the first registration certificate. (see the pictures) It shows that the first owner was engineer Lindahl, living at Vretgränd 11 in Uppsala. He bought the car new and it was registered on July 27, 1939, just under a month before the outbreak of World War II. It was assigned registration number C 62849. Where the county letter C stands for Uppsala County. The engineer got to enjoy his new car for just under a year. In 1940, the car was taken out for war deployment, which is a kind of compulsory disposition: In the event of high alert or war, the owner was obliged to hand over the car to the defense. The owner was obliged to keep the vehicle in a drivable condition. During certain periods, there could also be a requirement that equipment such as a roof rack or winter tires be included when handing it over. If the state claimed the car, the owner received financial compensation based on a valuation of the vehicle. During the 1940s, when this car was new, all sales of gasoline to private individuals were basically banned in order to save fuel for the defense. The fact that the car was deployed for war made it an important resource for the state. We do not know whether the car was claimed by the state or was only deployed for war as a preventive measure. However, we do know that the car was sold to a car company on May 15, 1945. The car company thus became the car's second owner.

Facts about the model

The first-generation Opel Kadett was introduced in December 1936 by Opel’s technical director, Heinrich Nordhoff. The Kadett became a major success for Opel and was technically advanced for its time, featuring a fully steel unitary body. By 1938, the model held a 59 percent market share in its class.

Production of the Kadett ceased in 1939 with the outbreak of World War II. After the war, the factory’s production lines were dismantled and transferred to the Soviet Union as war reparations. Press tools and a number of Opel Kadetts were moved from the factory in Rüsselsheim, despite it being located in the American occupation zone. In the Soviet Union, the Kadett was reborn after the war as the Moskvitch 400, and under this new name, production continued until 1956.
