An exciting lot with equally exciting possibilities, in what is for many the most attractive version of the model, the one combining the old front end with the then-new hydraulic system using the green LHM fluid, Liquide Hydraulique Minéral. Available for one model year only, 1967.

"For a project-minded DS enthusiast with a passion for preserving provenance, it hardly gets better than this."

Description

It was delivered to its first owner in Helsingborg in July 1967 by the Citroën dealer Bilfirma Anders Cederholm in the same city and was registered for road use the same day, 1967-07-11. A service entry appears in the book in January 1969 at 22,980 km. The previous owner (the current owner's late husband) bought the car in 1973, had it inspected on 28/2 the same year, and took the car off the road at some point during the period up to the same date two years later, in 1975. Why he chose to lay it up, no one knows. Today, and consequently also just over 50 years ago, the odometer reading is and was 37,593 km. There is therefore a strong likelihood that the car's total mileage is in fact only 37,590 km. In any case, the last passed inspection was on 1973-02-28.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition

The engine compartment appears untouched, but the engine is seized and cannot be turned over with the crank. Among the loose parts accompanying the car, we find used cylinder sets, which may have something to do with the engine's condition. In any case, the engine will need to be opened up and examined.

  • Interior condition

The leather interior is in surprisingly fine and pleasant condition, as are the door panels and carpets. Some scratches on the steering wheel, but otherwise a nicely preserved dashboard. The headliner and panels will probably need to be replaced, as on all old goddesses when the foam rubber dries out. A relatively easy job.

  • Exterior condition

The original paint has a patina that would be well worth preserving as is, following a thorough polish and treatment. The owner has carried out good welding work and repairs to the known trouble spots of what was, in its day, a newer car with exceptionally poor and in many respects nonexistent rust protection. Sheet metal work also remains to be done in the floor, where sections have already been cut out. In the photos, the rear fenders, panel, and bumpers are only temporarily hung in place, hence the fit, and the ride height has been mechanically manipulated simply to make it possible to transport and roll the car.

  • General condition

An attractive model in a condition that some will see as a major challenge and others as a great opportunity. Nice history and an intriguingly low odometer reading to research and assess the probability of. That someone would have managed to cover over 100,000 km (meaning the odometer has rolled over) with this car in 4-5 years, and without relevant wear at that, is hard to believe.

Facts about the model

When the Citroën DS (pronounced Déesse, meaning goddess in French) was presented at the Paris Motor Show in 1955, it took the entire automotive world by storm—no one had ever seen anything like it. The model lived on for 20 years and in 1967 received an important update in the form of a new hydraulic fluid system based on a green mineral oil, LHM, Liquide Hydraulique Minérale. This was a major improvement over the previous hydraulic fluid for the suspension system, which was similar to ordinary brake fluid. That fluid is hygroscopic, meaning it absorbs water, which sometimes led to corrosion in the system—just as conventional brake systems with DOT 4 classification can suffer from.
The 1967 model year specifically is considered particularly attractive, as it is the only production year featuring both the old front end and the new LHM system. The engine options were fairly simple; a V6 engine was under development but never reached production, as the smaller upcoming GS model demanded more of the development budget. However, during the Goddess's final years, fuel-injected versions of the 2.1 engine arrived, along with the final bored-out version, the 2.3IE. They produced 125 and 140 hp respectively.
In Sweden, the DS is often somewhat crudely called "Paddan" (the Toad), while other languages have far more beautiful epithets—and as mentioned, especially in its original language. En francais, une Deésse.
