"An untouched and well-maintained Volvo with good history. With a fuel-injected engine and a five-speed manual gearbox, built in Sweden, this is perhaps the best and most developed version of Volvo's 300 series."

Description

This Volvo was bought new by an elderly man in Karlskoga. The only optional extra it received was a set of seat covers – not even a radio was fitted. When he passed away, his adult daughter inherited the car. The car was stored in an unheated garage, but it saw little use. The same family owned the car until 2020, when it was bought by a man in Stockholm. At that point, the seat covers were removed. A year later it was purchased by a friend of his – automotive journalist Fredrik Nyblad. In five years he has added just over 8,000 km to the total mileage, and the odometer now reads 28,980 km. In 2022 it received new tires, and the timing belt was replaced. It was most recently serviced with an oil and oil filter change in September 2025. A binder with receipts and inspection records from the car's entire history is included, as well as the owner's manual and service book. During Fredrik Nyblad's ownership, the Volvo appeared in a scene in the SVT drama series Spelskandalen, and it has been featured on the cover of Klassiker magazine twice. The first time was as the subject of a buyer's guide, and the second time was in the very last issue of the magazine before it ceased publication in 2025. A copy of both magazines is included with the purchase. The Volvo was inspected with no remarks in June and is therefore not due for its next inspection until June 30, 2028. Two keys are included.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition

Starts and runs well, both engine and gearbox. No unusual noises were heard during the test drive. The few electrical functions present, such as the windshield wipers and fan, were tested and are working. At certain speeds, slight vibrations may be felt in the steering wheel.

  • Interior condition

A very fine interior that is intact and clean. The fact that this is a 38-year-old car is perhaps only noticeable in that the upholstery fabric has become slightly slack in places. A small piece of plastic is missing from the inner door handle on the driver's door, and there are some scratch marks on the right side of the luggage compartment – see photos. The engine bay is also clean and in good condition.

  • Exterior condition

A body in good condition with no rust to be found. The paintwork could be machine polished for more shine, as primarily the hood and trunk lid are somewhat dull. A minor soft dent is present on the left front fender, and both front fenders have minor hand-painted touch-ups. The decorative stripes along the body sides and the rubber trim on the door handles have dry cracks; this does not affect their function.

  • General condition

An opportunity to purchase a well-functioning Volvo 360 with low mileage and well-documented history.

Facts about the model

On February 19, 1976, the Volvo 343 was launched. It was the result of Volvo gradually acquiring the Dutch DAF passenger car manufacturing operations during the 1970s, which from 1975 became the subsidiary Volvo Cars B.V. The Volvo 343 was a three-door rear-wheel-drive hatchback with a 1.4-liter engine from Renault. Like all DAFs, it had a continuously variable automatic transmission. Volvo had entered the development process quite late, and if Volvo had not stepped in, it would have been launched as the DAF 77. It quickly became apparent that the quality had some shortcomings, and many Volvo customers found it hard to come to terms with the quirks of the continuously variable belt drive. In addition, the engine was too weak to cope with the car's size and transmission. But Volvo did not give up. Gradually the car became more and more Swedish, even though it was built in Born, the Netherlands. From the 1979 model year it was available with a four-speed manual gearbox, and the following year a five-door version was launched. For the 1981 model year came the DLS and GLS, which had a more powerful Swedish-built two-liter B19 engine. For the 1984 model year, Volvo did as many other car manufacturers and let its hatchback grow into a four-door sedan model. One of the novelties for 1985 was the B200 engine, which was also found in certain versions of the Volvo 240 in Sweden. For the 1986 model year, all manually shifted models received the five-speed M47 gearbox, which in the 300 series was called the M47R, since the 300 series had a transaxle layout with the gearbox at the rear. A catalytic converter was available for the 1987 model year of the 360, and the B200F engine then produced 109 hp. On March 8, 1988, the millionth car in the 300 series was built, a five-door Volvo 340 which today is part of Volvo's heritage collection. The 1989 model year was the last sold in Sweden, but the model remained available in other markets. It was not until March 13, 1991, that the last example was built. In total, 1,139,834 cars of the Volvo 343/345/340/360 had been built. Despite the major problems at the start, the model became not only one of Volvo's most-produced cars. It was also important in enabling Volvo to maintain a dealer network in many European countries where smaller cars often accounted for a large share of car sales.
