"A nice 1960s bike in very presentable condition. Runs well in engine and gearbox and feels stable on the road. Surprisingly lively for a 350."

Description

From what we have been able to trace regarding this Navigator, it came to Sweden in 1978. It was taken off the road and changed owners in 1983-84, and then remained off the road for a long period. The current owner took it over in 2022, and after some minor fixes it was inspected in 2023 and put back on the road. According to the current owner, this is probably the only Navigator in Sweden. This is according to information from and contact with the Swedish Norton Club (Svenska Nortonklubben).

Condition

  • Mechanical condition

Everything in good working order. Engine, gearbox, clutch, and brakes are in good working order. The speedometer (Smiths) also works satisfactorily

  • Exterior condition

The condition is robust and nice for a rider. Used but well cared for. Minor scratches are present. The chrome is slightly pitted in places and the whole bike exudes original condition. Nice tires mounted on wire wheels that have some rust pitting.

  • General condition

Wonderful original condition and, in our opinion, exactly the condition it should be in. This bike offers every possibility. Ride it as-is from day one, or restore it to like-new condition. All according to your taste, preference, and level of ambition.

Facts about the model

The Navigator was launched in 1960 at the Earls Court Motorcycle Show and was a further development of the Norton Jubilee. The engine was bored out (from 60 to 63 mm) to give a capacity of 349 cc. The cylinders, which were separate on the Jubilee, were now a single casting to improve oil retention, but the cylinder heads remained separate. A Norton Roadholder front fork and an eight-inch diameter drum brake were fitted to replace the Jubilee's light front end. The frame's downtube was reinforced to improve handling and cope with the power increase to 22 hp.

Top speed was recorded at over 80 miles per hour (130 km/h), and the factory persuaded Harold Daniell, the Isle of Man TT rider who named the Norton Featherbed frame, to enter a standard Norton Navigator in a race at Silverstone Circuit, where it recorded 163 kilometers per hour (101 mph) on the straight. This was achieved with only minor carburetor modifications.

The 1960 model was still aimed at the Jubilee market. Early Navigators had two-tone paintwork in gray and black for the "De Luxe" and gray and blue for the "Standard" model. From October 1962, the Standard's color scheme was changed to black and polychromatic blue, with black seats with white piping.

When Norton production moved to Plumstead in 1963, production of the De Luxe ceased, but the Standard model continued with wider front forks and a steering lock, until Navigator production ended in 1965 in connection with the collapse of Norton's parent company.
