Description
The car was imported from the UK in 1985, and Jan bought it in 1988. It was repainted black during the 1990s (original colour unknown) and, at the same time, the engine was swapped from the original 2.5 PI injection unit to a simpler and more reliable 2.5 carburettor setup.
For over 30 years the car was mainly used as a summer driver. It was last inspected in 2014 and continued to be driven until 2016, after which it was stored in a garage.
The car now requires some welding work — ideally a new floor, as there is a hole on the passenger side. This repair was postponed due to Covid, and unfortunately Jan became ill before he could get it done. We have recently started the engine; it runs on starting fluid but will need a full service and general mechanical review. The bonnet latches need additional bolts and proper alignment, and the bonnet release cable should be replaced.
The car is otherwise complete and comes with both a tonneau cover and a hardtop. The hardtop has rust damage and body filler, and personally, I would remove it and enjoy the car with just the tonneau for a lighter and more open feel.
With a few weekends’ work in the garage — some basic welding and mechanical servicing — it should be possible to get this car back on the road and inspected again.
Technical data
Condition
-
Mechanical condition
The engine starts and runs on starting fluid, but the car will need a new battery, a full service, and a general mechanical review before being driven. The gearbox engages and shifts, and the car rolls easily, although the brakes have not been tested. It was fully running and roadworthy up until 2016 before being garaged. The car sits on a good set of wheels with older but usable tires.
-
Interior condition
Interior is complete but would benefit from tidying. The seats are in usable condition, as is the carpet, though both show wear from age. The dashboard is complete with its original gauges and a wooden steering wheel.
Included are the driver’s door card, front carpets, tonneau cover, and roof with frames. A hardtop is also fitted but shows rust damage (see pictures). A thorough clean and a set of new carpets would greatly improve the cabin’s appearance.
The seats have been removed to inspect the rust damage, so they are currently loose and not properly mounted; the driver’s seat frame is included and stored in the boot. -
Exterior condition
Overall, the car presents well, but there are visible rust blisters around the edges of the inner door frames and sills, along with a few spots of corrosion on the underbody. The main rust is in the front sections of the floor — ideally, all the floors should be replaced, as it’s an easier job when the front panels are already being worked on. The frame shows some older welding repairs in places.
The paintwork is presentable but shows small blisters in various areas. The bumpers are not included, as they were removed in the 1990s. As mentioned, the bonnet will need proper alignment and additional bolts fitted; there is also light rust damage along its edges, which should be easy to repair. -
General condition
These cars are sought after, and this one is offered at a very realistic price, leaving plenty of room for the next owner to carry out the necessary repair work. Parts are easy to source across Europe and are not expensive, making this a straightforward project. With some effort, it can become a fun and enjoyable summer car for the coming season.
