"An attractive example of the model with pleasant comfort equipment, appreciated now as then."

Description

It was delivered by the Volvo dealer Rejmes in Halmstad to its first owner in December 1989. The registry shows a few ownership changes within the family, but the car has always been kept in the owner's garage when not in use. It was driven as a daily driver in the early years and sparingly thereafter, as the owner had a company car through his own business. Complete service documentation, and the most recent service, including a timing belt replacement, was carried out in December 2022 at 134,440 km; the odometer currently reads 135,070 km. The most recent passed inspection was on 2025-03-26, meaning it is approved until 2027-03-31.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition

The engine, gearbox, brakes, and chassis feel normal and as they should. The engine bay is clean and tidy. New tailpipe and muffler. After just over 45,000 km, the owner has personally performed an oil service every year regardless of mileage. Four (!) timing belt replacements have been carried out; in 1996 at 57,000 km, in 2007 at 85,000 km, in 2014 at 115,000 km, and in 2022 at 133,000 km.

  • Interior condition

Fine, light and inviting plush upholstery. Good door panels – these model years used a stronger adhesive, which means the shrinking of the upper part of the door panels typical of the later 700-series models and early 900s is not present here at all. Slight tendency toward a sagging headliner with some loose spots, but otherwise fine. Surprisingly pleasant with an original leather steering wheel in fine condition. A working ECC climate control system is also nice – it holds the temperature and blows cold. The old phone holder is easy to remove.

  • Exterior condition

Nice and tidy original paint with normal or minor wear for the mileage, that is, a few touched-up stone chips. The fog lights work fine. Good glass, plastic, and rubber trim. New struts for the tailgate are included, as the old ones don't quite hold pressure. Currently fitted with three-peak mountain snowflake-rated Cooper studless winter tires from 2016 with good tread on original aluminum wheels. Even so, the car has rarely been used in winter. It will also most likely become a summer enthusiast car, and it bears repeating in every context where it becomes relevant:There is no such thing as an all-year-round tire. Winter tires have less grip, longer braking distances, and wear faster in warm temperatures. Drive your summer car on proper summer tires.

  • General condition

Representative example in well-maintained condition, relatively low mileage, and also featuring nicely functioning period-correct optional equipment. Meticulous service and documentation combined with an exceptionally positive overall impression.

Facts about the model

The 1990 Volvo 740 GLE represents a refined final phase of the now-classic 700 series, which was originally launched in 1982. The GLE designation (Grand Luxe Executive) denoted a higher equipment level with a focus on comfort, with the model featuring plush or leather upholstery, power windows, power mirrors, and often a sunroof. For the 1990 model year, the Volvo 740 underwent an extensive facelift, giving the car a more modern front end with new headlights, grille, and bumpers, as well as updated taillights. Mechanically, the 1990 GLE model was typically powered by the proven four-cylinder B230F engine with electronic fuel injection and catalytic converter, providing reliable operation and meeting the stricter environmental requirements of the period. The model was offered both as a traditional four-door sedan and as a spacious five-door wagon. The 1990 Volvo 740 GLE became one of the last true volume models in the series before its successor, the Volvo 940, took over.
