"It is easy to be impressed by this imposing luxury automobile. Design and presence, power and gravitas, and something that was virtually unattainable for the ordinary Swedish citizen of the 1950s. Now, 70 years later, it is an icon, almost mythical. To think that here in Sweden at that time there were two identical cars, one with Kilafors Jernverks AB and one with Salénrederierna. The car from Hälsingland is now in wonderful driving condition and longs to stretch its legs on the open road once again."

Description

This car was delivered from Crewe with chassis number BC 88 BG and an accompanying guarantee document dated February 25, 1957. It was registered for road use here in Sweden on March 8 of the same year. It received the registration number X12345, and when the new plates arrived it became AKL 615. The buyer was Kilafors Jernverks AB, with managing director Carl-Robert Norinder. For him, only the best would do; an ordinary Bentley for SEK 55,000 felt a little too "plain." So it became a Continental Sports Saloon with fastback bodywork that cost more than twice as much, approximately SEK 120,000. A Volvo PV cost SEK 9,000 at the time. There were, however, resources and financial muscle in the area around Kilafors. Bob, as he was known, had been widowed and remarried Anna-Lisa Ahlgren. She was an heir to the founder of Läkerol and Ahlgrens bilar in Gävle, Adolf Ahlgren. She had been married to the estate owner Arne Johnsson of Kilafors Herrgård, who tragically died in an aviation accident; together they had the children Ulf and Birgitta. After the marriage between Anna-Lisa and Bob, he eventually became the adoptive father of her children.

Beyond the candy business cars, there was a strong interest in cars and motorsport in the family, and Ulf became a successful racing driver over a 20-year career. Exclusive vehicles and competition cars were kept at the estate; Ferrari, Porsche, and Ulf's Mercedes 300 SL Gullwing were treasures that attracted attention. So when the adoptive father acquired his Bentley, it raised no eyebrows. He came to drive it as an everyday car for a great many kilometers, both in Sweden and on long journeys down to Europe and the Riviera. Everything suggests that his son Ulf also drove the car a fair amount.

In December 1971, a company director in Stockholm took over ownership. In January 1978, director number three took over. Even then, the long journeys continued, including trips down to Monte Carlo. From 1980 onward, however, the car was taken off the road, as can be seen in the documents. In October 1988, the current owner took over; a well-known figure in the motoring history hobby for many years. He put the car back in order again, partly with the help of a firm in England. The frame and rear end, despite, or perhaps because of, rustproofing and gravel from the roads of Hälsingland, were by then in such poor condition that a comprehensive effort was needed, including replacement of the frame. By the early 1990s it was back on the roads and took part in various meets and events. In December 1995, the current owner took a pause in his ownership when the car was acquired by the next owner, who relatively promptly shipped the car once again to England, this time for a comprehensive restoration over a couple of years. Everything was gone through and the car regained its original color, Shell Grey, after an interlude in Gunmetal; it is not entirely clear when that change had occurred. The car was now put into the condition it remains in today, with all mechanicals, finishes, and interior fully gone through. Air conditioning was also installed to further enhance comfort. In October 2007, the current owner returned and took over the car once again, and it has since been part of his extensive private collection.

The car comes with original documents and handbooks from Bentley as well as a wealth of paperwork including correspondence and receipts for the work carried out in England by firms such as A.E. Padgett, P.J. Fisher Classic Automobiles, and Auto Trade Restoration (Rolls Royce and Bentley), along with various service records from the 1970s onward. Also included is an original wooden crate with consumables, gaskets, and other useful items.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition

Since it has been sitting, a little starter spray is needed, but once it has been running it starts easily. The engine ran smoothly and nicely, and during a careful test drive on country roads and gravel roads everything was found to work in terms of steering, automatic gearbox, road holding, and brakes. The ride and running are comfortable and majestic. As far as we know, it was last serviced in June 2017 by a Bentley expert according to the 5,000- and 10,000-mile service schedules. At that time, oil was also topped up in the steering box and in the rear shock absorbers. The brakes needed attention, as there was leakage in the master brake cylinder and in one front cylinder; this is said to have been rectified.

Not checked on a lift, but everything has been gone through, and it has been driven very little since then and always stored in a garage.

As with all older cars, not least the technically advanced and exclusive Grand Routier cars, an overhaul and attention are a good investment.

  • Interior condition

Fine and exclusive interior in original condition. Beautiful seats and rear seat offering wonderful comfort. The same applies to the door panels, trim panels, headliner, and carpets, all of which are in fine condition. Fine wood details, steering wheel, controls, dashboard, and gauges are also in excellent condition. The Blaupunkt radio is period-correct. During the restoration in the late 90s, an air conditioning system was installed, which works flawlessly. All gauges and electrical functions are in good order and work well. The rear seat can be folded up for more luggage space, with leather straps holding it in place. The trunk is in fine condition and features the same exclusive style as the cabin interior. A new battery is now fitted there.

  • Exterior condition

Fine paint that is now approximately 30 years old. The light gray color is understated and free from wear. The left rear fender, however, has been repainted at a later date due to a minor mishap with some scratches. Chrome, glass, trim, and emblems are in the same fine condition as the rest. This also applies to the wheels and hubcaps. The tires are in good condition, but their age is uncertain. The engine bay is clean, dry, and in fine condition.

  • General condition

Here all the pieces of the puzzle fall into place. The manufacturer, the special body, the world's fastest four-seater car of its time, the history, and the condition. Indeed, the entire presence exudes status as an enthusiast and collector car – an international and exclusive icon of motoring history.

Owner's comment

Our father has always been an enthusiastic motoring historian, and over the years many fine and well-maintained cars have passed through the collection. He has always cared for, serviced, and kept them in fine, roadworthy condition. It has been a way of life, and he and we in the family carry with us a wealth of friends, cars, and memories. This Bentley has been with us since 1988 and is something truly special. Now it is time for the next chapter for us and the cars in the collection.

Facts about the model

The Bentley S model was produced between 1955 and 1965 and largely shared its appearance with the Rolls Royce Silver Cloud. The S1 model years 1955-59 had a straight-six engine of 4,887 cc with twin SU carburetors. It is one of the most iconic, exclusive, and sought-after cars of the postwar era. Among other things, they had beautiful bodies that were hand-built by coachbuilders such as H.J. Muliner, James Young, and Park Ward, of which the first is the most sought-after. In their day, they were the world's fastest four-seater cars, and the Continental versions featured, among other things, a higher compression ratio and a modified cylinder head. The bodies were built in aluminum to keep the weight down. Reportedly, 431 cars were built in Continental specification. Between 1956 and 1957, 119 chassis were made in design series 7400, built by H.J. Muliner. Of these, 97 were RHD and 22 LHD.
