Facts about the model
Externally, the two new models are very similar, and both the Saab 900 NG (New Generation) and the Saab 9-3 OG (Old Generation) could be ordered with 5 doors, as a 3-door coupe, and as a convertible. The body is fundamentally the same and, at the time of production, was the family car in the world with the most torsionally rigid body. This strong structural foundation contributed to good handling and high crash safety. Additionally, the comfort was high, with seats delivering good Saab quality.
For the first time, the legendary Black Panel button was also present on the dashboard, inspired by Saab’s aviation heritage. During night driving, the Black Panel button extinguishes all instrument lighting except the speedometer, allowing the driver to concentrate better on driving.
The low air resistance provided both lower fuel consumption and reduced wind noise. The sleek body shape was ultimately designed by Norwegian-born Einar Johan Hareide, who was then responsible for exterior design at Saab and later became the company’s design chief.
The model designation 9-3 harmonized with the larger 9-5, but the changes were significantly more extensive. The upgrade to the 9-3 OG involved over 1,000 major and minor changes compared to its predecessor, the Saab 900 NG. New bumpers, a new grille, and a relocated license plate on the trunk were perhaps the most visible changes. However, the development also went deeper, with the body’s crash protection becoming even better.
According to the website car.info, there are 17,794 Saab 9-3s left in Sweden, but 1,221 have been scrapped just in the past year. Therefore, it is high time to get your hands on a specimen worth preserving.
