"Wonderful history with an unabashedly original exterior and interior."

Description

It was sold new in 1971 on the West Coast in its typically Californian white attire and was imported to Sweden in 1976. The Swedish buyer enlisted a friend who drove the car across the continent to New York, as it was much cheaper at the time to ship a car from the East Coast to Europe. A 400-mile journey that then, and still does, constitutes a significant portion of the car's total mileage. In one picture, the car can be seen in California before the transport drive to New York, and in a couple of screenshots, the owner found his conversation with the man who drove it, where they surprisingly made contact in a Facebook group. Entertaining reading, to say the least. In Sweden, the car was stationary between 1981 and 2006, when it was taken out and inspected. The owner at that time drove around 30 miles before the current owner purchased the car in 2009. He, in turn, hasn't been very active behind the wheel either, and with all the documentation and research at hand, this Challenger likely hasn't covered more than a total of 36 000 km.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition

The engine and transmission feel rumbling and smooth, and the chassis has the right amount of bounce. The owner mentioned that the muffler and exhaust system are original, and the right rear muffler actually has a crack even though it's not leaking or making noise. You can also see it in the picture underneath.

  • Interior condition

The interior is like the rest of the car, nicely preserved in its original state, with a seam that has come undone on the driver's seat cushion. An original FM radio with some form of tape player and an external microphone looks stylish on the center console. However, its functionality is uncertain.

  • Exterior condition

For the most part, it has charmingly worn original paint, but the right rear fender has been repainted after a parking incident from the early years in the USA. The convertible top is in nice and fresh original condition with its cover. The dual-row license plates and mudguards provide a particularly nice and genuine touch for those who appreciate period-appropriate Swedish details on American cars.

  • General condition

Nice and charming original car in an appealing condition for the enthusiasts who appreciate originality. This version with the larger 383 cubic inch engine for the convertible model is said to have been produced in only 168 units.

Facts about the model

A 1971 Dodge Challenger with all its engine options including the 440 cui, 440 six pack, and 426 Hemi is particularly sought after. For those looking to enjoy an open-top experience, the auction car with its 383 engine is also desirable since it was the largest engine offered in the convertible models.
