Condition

  • Mechanical condition

Technically, the car is in top condition. The engine has been completely rebuilt to original specifications by Custom Racing in Örebro. Matching numbers: There are a few minor details needed to make the car perfect. The transmission sometimes has a tendency to slip out of first gear. The brake servo is bypassed, and the door locks are not functioning. No major issues, though.

  • Interior condition

Inside, the car looks like new. Most of the interior has been replaced with new parts, such as seats, headliner, carpets, and instrument panel. See pictures.

  • Exterior condition

Externally, it is professionally painted and in excellent condition. All chrome, trim, and windows are in great shape. The stylishly widened original wheels are fitted with 140 hubcaps, which look great on the car.

  • General condition

A wonderful classic car model that has been restored to a fantastic condition by skilled professionals and an equally skilled owner. The car is a joy to behold.

Owner's comment

A station wagon registered as new in Västerås in June 1967. The first owner was a florist, and the car subsequently passed through several other businesses in the Mälardalen region. I purchased the car in 1975 when it needed new front beams and front fenders after having served hard as a company car for several years. In 1977, I traded it in at a dealership and bought a Saab 95. Many years later, my son found the car in the vehicle register, and it was sitting in a barn outside Kisa. I bought the car back and began the restoration work in 2012. The goal was for the car to be fully restored by its 50th anniversary in June 2017, which was accomplished with a few days to spare. The 1967 model year is the most common year for the station wagon, with 17,200 units produced. Everything has been restored as close to original as possible, except for the widened wheels with 140 hubcaps and a modern stereo installed.

Facts about the model

The Volvo Amazon was launched as the successor to the PV 444 and was significantly more modern in comparison, not least due to its 1950s design inspired by the Imperial’s split grille. The Amazon featured a pontoon body and was offered both as a two-door and a five-door station wagon. The wheelbase and the basic technical design were inherited from the PV 444.

The model was introduced in October 1961 as a two-door version and as a five-door station wagon in February 1962. The design of the Amazon was created by Jan Wilsgaard.

Volvo had an early focus on safety, and the Amazon was one of the first cars to offer seatbelt mounts as standard equipment. In 1959, the Volvo Amazon became the first mass-produced car in the world to have three-point seat belts in the front seats as standard. As early as 1957, the model was prepared for three-point seat belts, which could then be purchased as an option.
