Description
This wonderful Rapier first saw the light of day on Swedish roads in 1966. It passed between a few owners in different parts of the country until it ended up in Tranås with a highly renowned car restorer. Well known in Rootes circles for his knowledge of these cars. With many years in the trade as an upholsterer, the interior was completely re-sewn during the restoration based on the original. Nothing was left to chance – everything has undergone restoration and replacement with NOS parts.
The car was not in particularly bad condition when purchased in 2017, but the owner nevertheless chose to carry out a total restoration with the goal of "Sweden's finest Sunbeam Rapier"
The restoration of the car was completed in 2022 and it has since covered approx. 1,500 km. According to the owner, the car is the object of great admiration on the country's roads and at car meets. Comments range from "cute" to "I've never seen one of these before". Yes, you have to live with many curious admirers asking questions when driving this car. Naturally, the car has been named "LUCAS".

Mechanical condition
The engine spins quietly and smoothly and starts up easily. Nice gear engagement and a working overdrive.
The heater fan has a life of its own at times, and the speedometer reads slightly low. Small things to address if desired, or perhaps something one can live with. New tires from 2022 are mounted on the original steel wheels with beauty rings. The spare tire is also new. The original jack and hand crank are included. Yes, the car can actually be crank-started for those who wish. One set of keys is included. -
Interior condition
Completely reupholstered interior including seating surfaces, door panels, and carpets. The headliner is also new. Very stylish instrumentation with a wide array of gauges

Exterior condition
Exteriorly very beautiful in its fine blue color with a roof in the color Moonstone. There are occasional stone chips as well as some minor bubbles in the paintwork between the rocker panel and fender. Nice chrome throughout most of the car. The rear bumper has some light surface scratches.
The undercarriage is in good condition without any rust damage. Only a little surface rust can be found on the exhaust system. -
General condition
A fun car that attracts plenty of attention. A refreshing alternative to the far more common Cortinas. At least as much fun and just as quick, with the great advantage that you are almost always the only one with this model at car shows and events around the country.

Facts about the model
The Sunbeam name was registered as early as 1888 by John Marston in Wolverhampton for his bicycle production. The factory and its surroundings became known as “Sunbeamland”. In 1899, the first prototype car was built, and the first commercially produced car went on sale in 1901. In 1905, the automotive business was separated into the Sunbeam Motor Car Company Limited. Motorcycle production began in 1912.
During its golden age in the 1910s, 1920s and 1930s, Sunbeam became synonymous with high-performance cars and motorsport under chief engineer Louis Coatalen. Sunbeam was the first British car manufacturer to win a Grand Prix and became especially famous for its extreme record-breaking machines.
In 1927, Henry Segrave became the first person in the world to exceed 200 mph (approximately 322 km/h) on land, driving the iconic red Sunbeam Mystery, also known as the Sunbeam 1000 hp.
In 1920, Sunbeam joined forces with the French manufacturer Darracq and the British company Talbot to form STD Motors. Following financial difficulties during the Great Depression, Sunbeam and Talbot were acquired by the Rootes Group in 1935. During the post-war years, the cars were often marketed under the Sunbeam-Talbot name before the company eventually returned to using Sunbeam alone.
The Sunbeam Rapier achieved notable success in motorsport, including victory in the legendary Monte Carlo Rally in 1964.
During the 1950s and 1960s, Sunbeam launched several successful sporting models, including the Sunbeam Alpine, which famously appeared as James Bond’s car in the first Bond film, Dr. No.
The design history of the Sunbeam Rapier is also particularly interesting. The model was strongly influenced by the renowned American design studio Raymond Loewy Associates, with which the Rootes Group had a consultancy agreement.
It was specifically designer Holden “Bob” Koto of Loewy’s studio who developed the basic styling concept, drawing strong inspiration from Raymond Loewy’s iconic 1953 Studebaker coupés. The final details were then refined by Rootes’ own design team in England.
