"A '90s classic that works equally well for everyday use and special occasions."

Description

This Toyota Celica was sold new in the USA and was brought to Sweden in July 1994 as personal property during relocation. It is one of the Celicas that ASC in California converted to a convertible on behalf of Toyota. It was thus sold as a Toyota model in the USA. The GT designation means it has the more powerful four-cylinder engine producing 137 hp. It is also a Gold Emblem Package, which means gold-colored emblems, key holes, and stripes. In addition, there are gold-colored details on the wheels from ROH. An American 1990s convertible naturally has AC and an automatic gearbox. The Toyota was brought from the USA to Sweden as personal property in 1994. The current owner has had the car for 19 years. The soft top was replaced in 2022 and it has recently been serviced with a new timing belt, water pump and valve seals. At the same time, the cylinder head was decarbonized and the oil in the engine and gearbox was changed. A tonneau – an original convertible top boot – is included. The odometer shows 8 8139 American miles, which corresponds to 141 845 km. A previous owner had a Toyota workshop repaint the right door and front fender after damage, work that appears to be well done. Documentation with receipts, inspection reports, owner's manual and service book is included. The Celica is inspected through the end of April next year. Two sets of keys as well as an emergency key are included. In the video available here in the listing, a noise can be heard from one wheel, which was caused by a wheel hub that was incorrectly installed when the original wheels were fitted ahead of the sale. That fault has now been corrected.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition

Starts and runs well. The engine works well and the automatic transmission shifts as it should. Electrical functions such as the AC, blower fan, windshield wipers, and the power-operated soft top were tested during documentation and were working. The CD player works, but is somewhat loose, and the power antenna cannot extend due to a broken plastic cord.

  • Interior condition

The interior is intact and in good condition. There are a couple of minor blemishes on a plastic trim strip on the passenger-side sill.

  • Exterior condition

Overall, the Toyota is in good condition and no rust could be seen on the body at the time of documentation. The soft top is in good condition, but there are a few minor scratches on the plastic rear window. The front bumper has numerous stone chips. The third brake light in the spoiler on the trunk lid is missing and has been replaced with black plastic – see photo. A couple of the original wheels have clear coat peeling. The tires have good tread, but are of older date and have dry cracks. There is a crack in one of the daytime running lights.

  • General condition

A very nice and usable '90s classic – a decade with a bright future ahead for collector cars. The new owner can choose to simply drive and enjoy the car. The only thing that may need attention in the near term is a set of new tires. Otherwise, any work to be done is mainly cosmetic – such as repainting the front bumper.

Owner's comment

It has been in my ownership for 19 years and is 99 percent in original condition. It has never been driven hard by young drivers, and this is probably the only example in Sweden.

Facts about the model

The model name Celica was used by Toyota for seven different generations of cars from 1970 to 2006. Common to them all was their sporty character. The auction car is of the fifth generation, launched as a 1990 model. It was available with a range of four-cylinder engine options, with or without turbo, and was either front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. The open version was built by ASC in California. The abbreviation ASC first stood for American Sunroof Company and later for American Specialty Cars, and the company is known, not least in Sweden, for having built the prototype for the Saab 900 convertible. The convertible was also available with several engine options; in the USA, the Celica GT was the most powerful. The open model version was not sold in Sweden. The fifth-generation Celica was produced through 1993.
