"A practical and cheerful bus with a bit of attitude. Well used and in fine working order."

Description

It was delivered to its first Swedish owner in April 1972. Over the years, the bus has mainly been used commercially. The current owner has had the car for over 15 years and had it restored to the condition it is in today. It has mostly served as a classic surf bus and a cheerful means of transport for the owner's large family during the summer months. The most recent, and thereby final, passed inspection was carried out on 2021-06-21.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition

Engine rebuilt around 3-4 years ago with new cylinders and pistons. Weber 44s have replaced the L-Jetronic fuel injection. A lively engine, and the loud valve noise in the video most likely comes from incorrectly adjusted hydraulic valve lifters.

  • Interior condition

Custom-tailored leather upholstery in a sober dark blue shade adds an extra dimension of comfort on board.

Good headliner, carpets, and door panels. Non-working radio with a subwoofer in the trunk.

  • Exterior condition

Body repainted and restored 15 years ago. Presentable exterior today with marks and stone chips from use, without claiming either show quality or original appearance. Sound underneath. Older Toyo tires with good tread.

  • General condition

Good overall impression with nice bus functionality. Some mechanical needs that can easily be addressed at a knowledgeable enthusiast level.

Facts about the model

The Volkswagen Transporter T2 Baywindow was introduced in late summer 1967 as a 1968 model and was the second generation of Volkswagen's popular commercial vehicle. It replaced the original T1 model, the Splitscreen, and earned its nickname thanks to the new, large one-piece panoramic windshield that improved forward visibility. Beyond the updated appearance, the T2 offered a considerably more modern design with a safer body, improved rear suspension with semi-trailing arms, and an electrical system upgraded to 12 volts. Mechanically, the proven layout of a rear-mounted, air-cooled boxer engine was retained. The model evolved in two main phases during its European life cycle: the early generation, the Early Bay (1968–1971), is recognizable by its low-mounted front turn signals and small, oval taillights, while the later generation, the Late Bay (1973–1979), received high-mounted turn signals next to the grille, larger rectangular taillights, and heavier bumpers. The transitional 1972 model year was something of a crossover model that blended details from both versions. The engines grew from the original 1.6-liter unit to more powerful options of up to 2 liters from Volkswagen's Type 4 series, the so-called pancake engine. The model became an enormous global sales success in the form of panel vans, pickups, and luxurious passenger buses. The camper versions in particular, outfitted by external companies such as Westfalia, cemented the T2's status as the ultimate symbol of hippie culture, freedom, and adventure. Even after European production ended in 1979, the T2 bus continued to be produced for several decades in countries including Brazil, where it was finally retired as late as 2013.
