The engine and drivetrain run well. At the time of photography, the car had a somewhat high idle, as it required a fair amount of choke.

The spartan interior is in good usable condition with signs of use – see photos.

Fakten zum Modell
Up until that point, PV 444-based variants such as estate cars, panel vans, ambulances, and similar vehicles had almost exclusively been produced by independent coachbuilders on chassis designated “PV 445,” which Volvo had introduced in 1949. The PV 445 now being auctioned received its bodywork from the firm Grip-Kaross, a coachbuilding company located in Västervik, Kalmar County. The company was founded in 1937 under the name Grantorpets Fabriks AB—often simply called “Grip,” after the Grantorpet area of Västervik where it was based. The name was originally intended to be “Griv,” but Grip was considered to sound better.
The company took over premises and staff from an earlier business known as AB Spik. Initially, production focused on truck cabs and other bodies, combining woodworking, sheet metal work, and painting. After the introduction of the Volvo PV 445 chassis in 1949, Grip-Kaross increasingly specialized in building light vans, but also produced other special vehicles such as ambulances, postal vehicles, and transport vehicles. The bodies were designed by the company’s own designers (including Karl Möller and Bengt Karlsson), and chassis were delivered by rail to Västervik for further coachbuilding.
At its peak, Grip-Kaross employed up to around 100 people, including carpenters, sheet metal workers, upholsterers, and painters. Production was largely handcrafted, although a relatively significant number of bodies were produced during the 1950s. It is estimated that several thousand bodies were built on Volvo chassis (at least around 1,200–1,500 of the PV 445 type). A well-known example is a Volvo PV 445 ambulance with a custom-built Grip body from 1957. These were unique vehicles, built entirely by hand, and only a limited number of examples are documented today. In addition to light vans, the company also produced other special bodies for various public services, including vehicles for the Swedish Post Office and the Telegraph Administration.
