Beschreibung
More than 60 years later — after spending parts of his life in Australia as well — he fulfilled that dream back home in Sweden with the help of his son, who is also the registered owner of the car. The T-Bird arrived in Sweden in 2016 and was registered for road use here in April of that year. The current owner purchased the car in 2018, and it has covered less than 1,000 kilometers since then. The latest — and final — approved inspection was carried out on March 15, 2018.
The owner in the United States recounts:
“My father, Mack Gough, purchased the car in Phoenix, Arizona, in 1957. He then drove it back to Idaho Falls, Idaho. The car remained in Idaho Falls from 1957 to 1962. In 1962, the family moved to Salt Lake City, Utah, where the car stayed until 1970. In 1970, my mother and father moved to Grand Junction, Colorado. The car was restored by my father and a friend in 1995. At that time, the car was kept in the garage at his home in Grand Junction, where it remained until his death in 2015. The serial number confirms that the car still retains its original color, and that the interior, transmission, and rear axle (differential) are also original to the vehicle.”
Teknische Daten
Beurteilung Fahrzeugzustand
-
Zustand technisch
The engine starts easily and sounds excellent. The gearbox is smooth and easy to operate, the brakes perform well, and the car delivers an overall confident and enjoyable feeling on the road.
-
Zustand Interieur
An impeccable and classic interior with an abundance of red accents. The carpets and door panels are in fine condition. Older-style lap belts are fitted — at the very least, they complement the car perfectly with their charming vintage appearance.
-
Zustand Exterieur
Beautiful paintwork, straight body panels, and well-preserved chrome and glass. There are two minor edge blemishes: one at the very front of the hood and a small chip on the driver’s door. The convertible top is in fine and intact condition, and a hardtop is also included with the car.
-
Zustand gesamt
A strong overall impression of a beautifully realized automotive dream fulfilled later in life.

Fakten zum Modell
Following this successful launch, Ford took a cautious approach with updates for the 1956 model year. The most significant addition was the so-called “Continental Kit” — an externally mounted spare wheel at the rear — which freed up additional luggage space in the trunk, along with the introduction of a 12-volt electrical system. Together with new color options and round side windows in the hardtop, those were essentially the only changes. Almost.
For 1956, the 292 V8 engine from Mercury had grown to 312 cubic inches, and as before, buyers could choose between a three-speed manual gearbox or the two-speed Ford-O-Matic automatic transmission.
By 1957, the Ford Thunderbird received an even more powerful engine, a redesigned front bumper, a larger grille, more pronounced tailfins, and larger taillights. At the same time, the dashboard underwent a major modernization with round instruments. However, the following year saw the arrival of the next generation.
The Thunderbird, through its various generations, was produced from 1955 until 1997. Five years later, the model name returned once again before disappearing in 2005. In total, eleven generations have been produced so far. The first generation is regarded by many as the most beautiful of them all.
