"There is a special appeal to classic estate cars. This should be the kind of vehicle that was worked hard and used to its fullest extent. Instead, its first owner cared for it meticulously and drove it sparingly. The next owner now has the opportunity to enjoy the benefits of that care, as the car remains in remarkably good condition."

Beschreibung

This car was purchased new in March 1987 by the current owner’s grandfather from Volvo dealer Rejmes in Norrköping. He belonged to a generation of motorists who fitted seat covers from new and took great care to have their cars rustproofed. He carried out the servicing himself, carefully recording all maintenance and repairs in both the service book and a separate notebook, both of which are included with the car.

Following his grandfather’s passing, the current owner inherited the vehicle last year. Over the past decade, the Volvo has seen very little use, and the odometer currently reads 150,940 kilometres.

A box of spare items accompanies the sale, including the original front indicator lenses (which are dirty but intact), slightly damaged rear light units, touch-up paint, and the car’s original registration plates. Also included is the set of studded winter tyres purchased for the car in 1988. The tread remains in good condition, although the tyres have never been replaced.

Three sets of keys are included. The car has a valid inspection certificate until 31 July 2027.

Beurteilung Fahrzeugzustand

  • Zustand technisch

The car performs well mechanically, with both the engine and gearbox operating as they should, and no unusual noises were detected from the chassis. During the test drive, while the engine was still cold, it ran somewhat roughly, and occasional knocking sounds could be heard, as though part of the exhaust system was making contact with the bodywork.

The elderly previous owner, who kept the car until last year, may have adjusted the carburettor to run very lean, something reflected in the exceptionally low emissions recorded at the most recent inspection. This could help explain the engine’s behaviour when cold. Once the engine reached operating temperature, however, it ran smoothly and without any unwanted noises. Be sure to listen to the engine note in the accompanying video.

The radio, exterior lighting, windscreen wipers, and rear wiper were all tested during the inspection and functioned correctly. In preparation for the sale, the owner has replaced the timing belt. The engine oil and filter were changed last year, and the car has covered only 430 kilometres since then.

  • Zustand Interieur

The interior is clean and well-preserved overall. There is the occasional minor mark on the headliner, but otherwise it presents very well. The seats were protected by seat covers until last year, which has helped keep the original upholstery in excellent condition.

The car is fitted with an original accessory tachometer, while a modern radio with USB connectivity has been installed for improved everyday usability.

  • Zustand Exterieur

The exterior presents very well, with glossy paintwork and all trim pieces in place. The car is also fitted with so-called “Snow Cap” air intake covers below the windscreen, and all four side windows feature wind deflectors. In addition, it is equipped with a tow hitch.

The front indicator lenses, side indicators, and rear light units have been replaced with versions featuring white turn signals. While this was never an original specification on the Volvo 240, it is a popular modification among enthusiasts.

The bodywork is remarkably free from corrosion. Only a few rust spots are present, the most significant being on the tailgate. Minor bubbling is also visible in the right rear wheel arch and on the rear door jamb on the left-hand side (see photos). The windscreen rubber seal appears to have been fitted somewhat incorrectly and protrudes in a couple of places; it also seems to have been sealed with additional sealant.

The correct wheel covers for the model year show some wear and damage, but they still contribute to the car’s well-maintained appearance. A scratch is present on the left-hand rear roof pillar, and both door mirrors display minor scratches. Even so, these imperfections are unusually few and minor compared with what is typically seen on most Volvo 245s of this era.

  • Zustand gesamt

A Volvo 240 in good mechanical condition, with a well-documented ownership history, extensive records, and relatively low mileage. The only significant cosmetic flaw is the rust on the tailgate, although whether and when to address it is entirely up to the next owner.

Fakten zum Modell

The Volvo 240 remains the most-produced car in Swedish automotive history. Volvo itself now regards the XC60 as having taken over that title, but that comparison spans two entirely different generations built on different technical platforms.

During its 19-year production run, the Volvo 240 underwent several major updates. One of the most significant styling revisions arrived with the 1986 model year, when the car received a new bonnet and grille, new lower body-side mouldings, and, on the saloon model, a redesigned boot lid.

Further updates followed for the 1987 model year, although they were largely beneath the surface. The new B230K engine was designed to run on unleaded 95-octane fuel and featured a revised carburettor along with a Heron-type combustion chamber. The result was improved performance combined with lower fuel consumption. For the first time, Swedish buyers could also opt for a catalytic converter, in which case the fuel-injected B230F engine was fitted.

The only visible change for 1987 was the addition of a high-mounted third brake light, which on the estate version was integrated into the tailgate window.

Until 1985, the Volvo 240 had consistently been Sweden’s best-selling car, but sales declined steadily during the latter half of the 1980s. In 1987, it ranked as the fourth best-selling car in the country. This particular 245 is one of 16,635 Volvo 240s sold in Sweden that year and one of 47,860 Volvo 245 estates produced for the 1987 model year.

Production finally came to an end in May 1993. Between 1974 and 1993, a total of 2,685,171 Volvo 240s were built. To that figure can also be added the 177,402 examples of the related Volvo 260 series produced during the same era.
