"A stylish premium car where most things work as expected. The entire vehicle is in good condition, with light wear consistent with its age and mileage. However, the hardtop/convertible roof function is out of order. The hydraulics are intact, but the electrical function needs attention. It must currently be operated manually using the original Mercedes-Benz tool included. There are also some cosmetic details to address—an overall inspection and reconditioning would improve the condition further."

Description

This car was first registered for road use in Sweden in September 2004 and has since had seven owners in the country. An insurance claim led to a respray and a new soft top in 2013.

The current owner acquired the car in August 2025. He has driven approximately 400 km and fitted a set of AMG Aero II Monoblock wheels.

The odometer reads 242,470 km, where it has remained since 2017 when it stopped functioning. It is estimated that the car has driven an additional 10,000–15,000 km since then.

The car is inspected and ready to drive.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition

Starts easily with a pleasing sound and strong performance from the engine. During a test drive, steering and road holding were perceived to function well, and the automatic transmission shifts smoothly with working kickdown and effective brakes.
Not inspected on a lift, but what could be observed appeared to be in good condition regarding vital components.

  • Interior condition

A tasteful color on the leather interior, which shows signs of normal wear. The driver’s seat needs attention from an upholsterer, with some cracks in the seams and wear on the left side of the backrest.
Door panels, trim, rear seat, and carpets are in good condition with typical wear. Additional protective floor mats are included. The back of the driver’s seat was loose.
Steering wheel, controls, and dashboard are in fine condition, along with well-kept wood trim. Gauges and instruments function properly, but the odometer is not working. The air conditioning blows cold.
Fitted with a newer stereo and a wind deflector.

  • Exterior condition

Glossy paint with signs of normal wear, including minor stone chips, some scratches, and a few dents. Trim, emblems, and lighting details are in good condition with light wear.

Nice AMG wheels with some wear, fitted with different tire brands front and rear. The hardtop is in similar condition, with some paint bubbling along the lower rear edge. Slight separation of the interior trim near the side windows/windshield on both sides.

The soft top is in good, tight condition. Engine bay and trunk are both in good condition.

  • General condition

At just over 30 years old, this is a car that is now clearly stepping into the category of a classic and enthusiast vehicle. It is also a delightful grand tourer, offering the choice of open-top driving, temporary weather protection, or cruising as a comfortable coupé.

In any configuration, it is well-equipped with the technology and options of its time. There are some details to address, primarily the function of the hardtop/convertible roof.

Facts about the model

It is well known that both the epithets “Super” and “Sport” were included in the 1930s Mercedes SSKL – Super Sport Kompressor Leicht from 1931. However, whether the post-war Mercedes designation SL stands for Super Leicht or Sport Leicht depends on whom you ask in the history of Mercedes.

What we do know is that the new racing car 300 SL with gullwing doors, introduced in 1952, was eventually produced in a more civilized road-going version from 1954 to 1957. When it was discontinued, an open roadster with similar performance and styling was produced from 1957 to 1963.

At the same time, a slightly more subdued and refined SL model was also produced: the R121 Mercedes 190 SL, manufactured between 1955 and 1963. When it was time to replace these two, only one model emerged: the W113 Mercedes 230 SL, known as the “Pagoda.” This later evolved into the 250 SL and 280 SL versions, produced from 1963 to 1971.

In April 1971, it was time for the Pagoda’s successor: the R107 Mercedes 350 SL, featuring a 3.5-liter V8 producing 200 hp. Safety, technology, and handling were significantly improved compared to its predecessor. The model continued with minor updates over the years, with the final model year being 1989, when it was replaced by the next generation, the R129.

The new SL model was presented at the Geneva Motor Show in March 1988 and entered production in May the same year. The design is credited to Bruno Sacco. The first model year was 1989, and production continued through 2002. As with any new Mercedes model, it represented a significant step forward. In addition to reconnecting with the classic gullwing heritage, Mercedes aimed to lead in new technology and exclusive design. They also emphasized uniting their DNA of fast sports roadsters, luxurious coupés, and safe sedans.

What had previously seemed like an impossible combination—a visually striking sports car offering both performance and comfort while meeting high safety standards—was now achievable with the new SL. In their own words from the original brochure: “Here, tradition is combined with innovation. Safety with comfort. All at a high—indeed incomparable—level.”

Initially offered as the 300 SL-24 and the 500 SL, the model range later included everything from inline-six and V6 engines to V8s and even V12s. A facelift arrived for the 1994 model year, followed by further updates in 1996 and another facelift in 1999. Both minor and major technical improvements were introduced year by year until production ended in 2002, when the R230 successor was launched.

In total, 213,089 examples of the R129 model were produced.
