"A fine classic British sports car from the era around the 1950s/60s that has been restored and upgraded and is fine both overall and in detail. Following a service, a delightful sports car with good ride comfort and fine performance will soon be back on the roads again – it deserves to be."

Description

This car is registered as a 1500 according to the Swedish Transport Authority but it is a 1600 and has a Swedish history. On the original registration certificate it is named MGA Sport and the chassis number GHNL/71234 indicates 1600. It changed owners frequently during the 1960s/70s and was registered again for road use with new registration plates on 16 January 1973. The current owner, a well-known figure in the motor history hobby for many years, acquired the car in May 2004 but it was registered in his wife's name and has been part of his extensive private collection. The seller and Bilwebauctions chose for logistical reasons to leave the vehicle in the collection during inspection and photography.

During the 1980s this car underwent a thorough restoration by a sports car enthusiast who has restored many British cars and who is still active in the hobby today and serves as an inspector for MHRF. The car was properly and carefully body-filler applied and the bodywork renovated. The engine was thoroughly gone through with special camshaft, boring, pistons, balancing etc. An MGB cylinder head was fitted, also fully gone through. A special extractor manifold was manufactured along with an exhaust system with larger dimensions for better flow. Revs and produces power up to 6,000 rpm. The gearbox was renovated. The front end and brakes likewise. The rear axle is the correct one for wire wheels. These and hubs were purchased new. Painting with added clear coat at the end. Much new and re-chromed. Correct side windows which are included along with correct hood and tonneau. Since the current owner purchased it the car has had minimal use. When the restorer visited the owner a few years ago the car was in the same condition/level as when it was freshly restored.

Owner's comment

Our father has always been an enthusiastic motor historian and over the years, many fine and well-maintained vehicles have passed through his collection. He has always looked after, serviced and maintained them in excellent and roadworthy condition. It has been a lifestyle and a multitude of friends, vehicles and memories he and we as a family carry with us. Now it is time for the next chapter for us and the vehicles in the collection.

Facts about the model

MG Morris Garages was founded by W.R. Morris. Initially he sold bicycles and then cars. From 1913 he manufactured cars under his own name, Morris Motor Company. He retained Morris Garages as a separate company and from 1924 he sold Morris cars with tuned engines and special coachwork as MG cars.

During the 1930s a number of sporting versions were made, including the MG Midget T-type. These T-type cars TA, TB, TC, TD and TF were manufactured between 1936 and 1955 with some interruption during the Second World War. As early as 1935 W.R. Morris had sold MG to the Nuffield Organisation. In 1968 MG became part of British Leyland and in 1980 it was over. However the marque lived on with Rover and later BMW but in 2005 it was over once again. Now, however, Nanjing Automobile Group has dusted off the MG name once more. But that is another story entirely.

The MGA was the first MG in the sports car range that did not have external wings, now it featured a more modern body with soft lines in so-called pontoon design, officially presented at the Frankfurt Motor Show 1955. The model was fitted with the straight-four BMC B-engine from, amongst others, the MG Magnette but with twin S.U. carburettors which initially produced 68 bhp, the engine output was relatively quickly increased to 72 bhp. The four-speed gearbox also came from the saloon. The front suspension was independent while the rear axle was suspended on leaf springs. The first model launched in 1955 was a roadster but a closed Coupé version also began production in 1956, when 16 examples were completed. Over the years a 1600 engine of 80 bhp was added as well as a Twin Cam version which produced 108 bhp. In the summer of 1959 the MGA also received front disc brakes. In June 1961 the MK II arrived with, amongst other things, a new grille and new rear lights as well as a larger 1600-engine of 86 bhp.

According to information, a total of 101,476 examples of the MGA were manufactured 1955-1962.
