"Rare gem."

Description

This is a car with an exceptional history. The starting point was a Volvo 164E from 1974, which the current owner undertook with the ambition to build the estate car that Volvo themselves never manufactured – a Volvo 165.

The conversion was completed in 2011 and the result is a highly personal interpretation of how a six-cylinder Volvo estate from the 1970s could have looked. The owner also chose to give the car a somewhat unconventional and more modern touch by painting it in Ocean Race blue. The interior has also been given its own character with upholstery from a Volvo 240, 1986 model year and onwards.

Since the conversion, the car has been stored well and has been started regularly, approximately every three to four months. According to the owner it runs well, but at the inspection the engine was not firing on all cylinders. The car has been used very sparingly in recent years. The odometer was reset at the time of the conversion and therefore cannot be used as an indicator of the car's total mileage.

There are a number of details remaining to be addressed. The cold start valve for the D-Jetronic system is not functioning, which makes the car somewhat difficult to start when the engine is cold. Some trim pieces need to be fitted (some are included loose, see photos) and some are also missing and should be added to give the car a more finished overall appearance.

The car is relatively well-built and presentable. The Volvo 165 never existed as such in Volvo's regular model programme, and there is therefore also a distinct element of personal taste and enthusiasm evident here.

It simply represents an idea of the Volvo 165 that many Volvo enthusiasts over the years have wished the factory had built – a large, six-cylinder estate car with classic Volvo character.

Facts about the model

Volvo's 140 Series was manufactured from 1966 to 1974 in over 1.2 million examples and is certainly one of the great car successes of the Swedish welfare state. It was made with two, four and five doors (Estate). From model year 1969, the executive estate Volvo 164 was also manufactured, which was only produced in a four-door version. It featured a 6-cylinder engine. These cars had a different front and a longer wheelbase, as the front had been extended to accommodate the engine. In addition, they had more comfort and luxury features. No five-door Estate version was on the menu. However, a 6-cylinder version of the Volvo 240/260 eventually appeared.

Both in the past and in the present, however, enthusiasts have completed 165s. Volvo themselves are said to have built some prototypes, including an ambulance. A Volvo employee also had Yngve Nilsson's Coachbuilding Works build a car for him. It eventually came to be "discovered" and restored by Fredrik Nyblad, Volvo enthusiast and journalist at the magazine Klassiker.
