"This cars still command real road presence wherever they go — an iconic design that attracts attention whether driving or parked. This example runs and drives well with very solid bodywork, only needing a routine review and service before being fully enjoyed."

Description

1963 Mercedes-Benz 190 SL finished in Ivory White (DB608), a very late-production example believed to be one of the final 160 cars built. Chassis number 121040-10-025721 places this elegant roadster right at the end of the legendary 190 SL production run.

For more than 30 years the car has remained within the same caring family ownership, where preserving its originality and character was always more important than over-restoring it. That feeling is still present throughout the car today — from the original windshield and Bosch headlight surrounds to the original factory instruction manual that still accompanies the car. It feels like a car that has simply been loved and carefully looked after rather than rebuilt.

The 190 SL was originally delivered new in Munich to Dr. Ingomar Tukay, who kept the car until 1989 when Ingrid Jarr of Kalmar imported it to Sweden. In the early 1990s it was part excahnged in 1992 to Carlqvist’s Bil in Tingsryd, where the current family found and purchased the car.

Between 1995 and 1999 considerable work was carried out to preserve the car for the future. Rust repairs were completed to the front floors and battery box area, the gearbox was rebuilt by Mercedes-Benz in Ljungby and the chrome work was professionally restored. The car was also carefully repainted in its current Ivory White by a vocational teacher in Hovmantorp outside Växjö.

Originally the car left the factory in Dark Grey (DB190), a color still preserved on the hardtop today. The family intentionally chose not to repaint the hardtop, allowing the next owner either to enjoy the contrast as it is, repaint it to match the car, or even return the car to its original factory color combination one day.

The original interior has also been lovingly preserved rather than restored. Its gentle patina and aged character give the car a warmth and honesty that perfectly suits a nearly 65-year-old Mercedes-Benz. It is not just a beautiful classic roadster, but a car with soul, history, and a story that can still be felt every time you sit behind the wheel. The car comes with a wonderful history file including its original service book, owner’s handbook, sales brochure, and a large collection of older documentation preserved from its years with the original German owner.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition

We have recently transported the car to our depot and carried out a general review. The ignition key barrel has been repaired, and the car now starts easily with a little choke and a short warm-up. Once warm, the engine runs very smoothly and quietly with a well-balanced feel.

Out on the road the car feels solid and stable, with a good clutch, very direct gearshift, and strong brakes including the handbrake. There is a slight blow from the right rear exhaust back box, and after limited use in recent years the car would benefit from a proper full service before being enjoyed regularly again.

Under the bonnet everything appears complete and in order, although the heater cable and valve will require repair along with some new cables. The car is inspection exempt forever and comes fitted with a nice set of original wheels and hubcaps along with older but still usable tires.

  • Interior condition

The red interior has a wonderfully original feel and remains in good condition throughout. Both front seats still offer nice padding and comfortable seating, with the driver’s seat showing only a small split in the ribbing. The leather presents well overall with some age-related dryness and light cracking, but no major holes or damage.

In the rear, the car features a rare padded side-mounted passenger seat, something we have rarely seen before on a 190 SL. The door cards are complete and presentable, although both sides show some darker aging marks to the leather, also visible on sections of the dashboard.

The original rubber floor mats are still fitted, now showing age with some drying and cracking on the driver’s side. The dashboard itself remains beautifully original with working gauges and instruments, a lovely undamaged steering wheel, and even the wind-up clock inside the glovebox still functioning today. An older Blaupunkt radio is also fitted, while the car comes complete with its factory hardtop.

  • Exterior condition

This car presents extremely well overall with straight bodywork, nicely fitting panels, and good shut lines throughout. There are no noticeable dents or damage, and no visible signs of rust. The underbody is clean and solid with no standout rust or repair issues.

The paintwork still retains a deep shine today, showing the quality of the repaint carried out in the late 1990s. Chrome work all around is bright, clean, and undamaged apart from one very small light scratch on the rear bumper that is hardly noticeable.

The boot area is exceptionally clean and tidy with no rust issues, and still houses the spare wheel along with the original tool kit. Overall, this is a car that clearly shows decades of careful ownership and proper garage storage.

  • General condition

A truly charming and honest car that we hope the next owner will preserve and enjoy just as it is, appreciating its wonderful original character and atmosphere. It only needs a proper service and light review before being taken out on long summer drives, where it will undoubtedly be admired wherever it goes.
