"Munich’s cutting-edge technology of the 1990s, presented in appealing original condition and offering an excellent foundation for future collector-car ownership. A distinctive and increasingly sought-after grand tourer that combines advanced engineering, effortless performance, and timeless design."

Description

It was delivered to its first owner in Stockholm by Förenade Bil in Solna in November 1990. That owner must nevertheless have been based on Sweden’s west coast, as the service book shows maintenance being carried out by BMW-authorized specialists such as Wölkes Bil, Bayerische Bilservice in Gothenburg, and Asplunds Bil outside Borås, who collectively serviced the car up until 2006.

The current owner purchased the car in 2000 with approximately 35,000 km on the odometer and used it regularly until 2006. By then, the total mileage had reached just over 134,000 km. In connection with the purchase in 2000, the owner had the car undergo a comprehensive rustproofing treatment.

Over the past 20 years, the car has therefore covered no more than 7,000 km and has spent long periods off the road. The most recent approved roadworthiness inspection was nevertheless carried out on September 5, 2024.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition

Starts readily and without hesitation, with a solid, substantial feel on the road. The car’s design incorporates two batteries, which require attentive maintenance to ensure that all systems and functions remain fully operational.

The corrosion-protected valve covers and intake manifold have developed a brownish hue in the engine bay. This can most likely be removed with modern detailing products for those who prefer a cleaner appearance.

  • Interior condition

The interior presents very well, with supple leather upholstery, a clean headliner, and well-preserved door panels. The driver’s seat shows only minimal wear on the bolster from entering and exiting the vehicle.

In a way, the first owner made a bold choice by specifying a red leather interior. For today’s enthusiast, however, it is very much a benefit—the unusual color combination adds both character and visual appeal, giving the car a distinctive touch that sets it apart from the ordinary.

  • Exterior condition

  • General condition

A BMW 850i makes a commanding impression through its design, performance, and engineering. It is a fascinating grand touring coupé to explore, enjoy, and preserve.

This particular example benefits from a well-documented history, a limited number of owners, and an attractive overall condition. Having spent much of the past two decades in storage, it now seems ready and eager to return to the open road in the hands of its next custodian.

Facts about the model

The BMW 850i (E31) was unveiled at the 1989 Frankfurt Motor Show and launched as a 1991 model year vehicle, serving as BMW’s undisputed flagship. Developed during the latter half of the 1980s at enormous expense, it was conceived as the successor to the aging 6 Series, but with the far more ambitious goal of elevating BMW into the highest echelon of the luxury and high-performance GT market.

Penned by designer Klaus Kapitza, the 850i featured an exceptionally sleek wedge-shaped profile, retractable pop-up headlights, and frameless side windows without B-pillars. The result was a timeless grand touring coupé with a remarkably low drag coefficient of just 0.29. Beneath its long bonnet sat BMW’s 5.0-litre M70 V12 engine, producing 300 horsepower and paired with either a four-speed automatic transmission or a newly developed six-speed manual gearbox.

From a technical perspective, the 850i was little short of a rolling laboratory. It was among the first production cars in the world to be designed entirely using CAD technology and incorporated a host of advanced systems. These included electronic throttle control (drive-by-wire), a sophisticated multi-link rear suspension, Electronic Damper Control (EDC), and advanced traction and stability systems such as ASC+T.

Despite attracting enormous attention upon its launch, sales were heavily affected by the global economic downturn and the Gulf War in the early 1990s, making the expensive and fuel-hungry luxury coupé a difficult sell. Today, however, the BMW 850i has firmly established itself as a modern collector’s car, celebrated for its distinctive 1990s styling, smooth V12 powerplant, and status as one of BMW’s most ambitious engineering achievements.
