"This convertible has served as a family car, though primarily as a second car. After 20 years on the road, there are some details that need attention, and a thorough detailing and refurbishment would do it good."

Description

This vehicle was delivered new on June 3, 2005, in Lausanne, Switzerland, to a Swedish family residing there at the time. In late 2024, the family's son moved to Sweden for work and brought the Saab with him as part of his household belongings. It was registered for road use in Sweden on January 1, 2025.

During its time in Switzerland, the car received a Hirsch performance upgrade (144 kW / 196 hp) and was serviced regularly. The odometer currently reads 219,590 km. The original owner's manuals in French are included with the car.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition

The car started easily, and the engine ran smoothly. During a short test drive in a residential area, everything appeared to function well, including the steering, clutch, gearbox, handling, and brakes.

The engine bay would benefit from an inspection and detailing, and the washer fluid reservoir cap is missing. The car was not inspected on a lift, but the areas that could be viewed appeared to be in good condition.

  • Interior condition

The interior remains in original condition and shows normal signs of use consistent with its age. The seats provide comfortable support, and the steering wheel, controls, and instruments function properly.

The car is equipped with its original period-correct integrated radio, CD player, navigation system, telephone, and information display, all of which are in working order. The cup holder is not functional. Textile floor mats are fitted throughout the cabin.

  • Exterior condition

Original paintwork with normal wear consistent with the car’s age and mileage. The glass, trim, and badges are in good condition. There are a few minor stone chips in the windshield. The wheels show typical signs of use and are fitted with good tires.

The convertible top is in good condition, remains watertight, and its operating mechanism functions properly.

  • General condition

This model has already surpassed the 20-year mark and is steadily on its way to achieving classic status. It already qualifies as an enthusiast and collector's car. As such, it represents a sensible choice—both practical to use and presented here in well-preserved original condition, although some attention to detail may be required.

    A Swedish classic.

Facts about the model

The first-generation version of the new 9-3 model, produced from 1998 to 2003, was essentially a facelift of the previous Saab 900. With the arrival of the second generation for the 2003 model year, however, far more substantial changes were introduced. The familiar hatchback coupe was discontinued and replaced by a sedan—or, in Saab terminology, a SportSedan. A new Cabriolet followed the following year. These models were entirely new and were built on GM’s Epsilon platform, shared with vehicles such as the Opel Vectra and Cadillac BLS. As usual, the Saab range spanned from basic entry-level versions to the high-performance Aero models.

Saab’s convertible models moved between several production facilities over the years. Early convertibles were built by Valmet in Finland. The second-generation 9-3 Cabriolet, introduced for the 2004 model year, was instead produced by Magna Steyr in Austria. Towards the end of production, manufacturing was moved back to Trollhättan, although the final 2012 model year cars were assembled in Nyköping.

Hirsch Performance AG is a Swiss company whose relationship with Saab dates back to 1967, when Georg Hirsch took over as a Saab dealer in St. Gallen. In 1987, a spin-off company named Carline AG—later renamed HPAG—began specializing in vehicle enhancement and customization. The foundation of its current core business, engine performance upgrades, was established in 1993. In 2002, the brand Saab Performance by Hirsch was launched as an official and exclusive partnership with Saab in Trollhättan. Naturally, this collaboration ended when Saab ceased operations. Today, Hirsch continues independently and serves as a center of expertise for the development and production of performance upgrades for Saab vehicles.
