"Recently serviced and recommissioned in preparation for sale. Further follow-up is recommended to ensure long-term reliability of the braking system and related functions. There are details that could be improved, but the charming original condition, complete with honest patina and nostalgic character, is very appealing as it stands."

Description

This car was first registered for road use on March 16, 1971, and originally spent its early years in Dalarna. The current owner has had the car since October 2005; prior to that, it belonged to her grandparents. There in Dalarna, the car was driven gently and sparingly over the years. They acquired it in November 1973, at which time the odometer showed 36,000 km.
After the grandparents, the owner’s parents kept the car for a few years. According to the service booklet, after ten years the car had covered 78,610 km. The odometer currently reads 289 km, but it has rolled over once, making the correct mileage 102,890 km. During the past 15 years, the car has only been driven a few hundred kilometers. When not in use, it has mostly been stored in a garage.
The car was also featured in an extensive article in the Swedish automotive magazine Teknikens Värld Klassiska Bilar, issue no. 7, 2014.
Included with the car are the warranty certificate from when it was sold as a lightly used vehicle in 1973, the owner’s manual, and a largely completed service booklet. Two keys with the original key number tags are also included.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition

The car starts easily and the engine runs well. During a short test drive on country roads, it performed nicely with good function in the clutch, gearbox, and brakes, although it would benefit from further inspection and more regular driving to reach even better condition. Overall, it offers a very pleasant driving experience in a charming car.
The vehicle has been inspected on a lift, where some signs of rust were noted in a few areas, along with a couple of older repairs at the rear edge of the front wheel housings near the floor sections. However, considering its age, the underside is in genuinely respectable condition. The car has also been rustproofed and is relatively dry underneath the engine.
The lights and electrical lighting functions would benefit from an overhaul.

  • Interior condition

Original interior in fine, well-preserved condition. The seats and rear bench offer very good comfort. Door panels, headliner, and carpets are all in nice condition. The steering wheel, controls, gauges, and dashboard are also well preserved. Protective rubber floor mats are fitted. A small period-style accessory console is mounted by the gear lever. The functionality of the fuel gauge is uncertain.

  • Exterior condition

Fine original paintwork with normal light wear consistent with the car’s age and mileage, along with some minor touch-ups. The glass, chrome trim, moldings, and lighting details are all in good condition. Period-correct auxiliary running lights are fitted. The wheels are in nice condition, and the tires appear good visually, although they should be replaced due to age and dry cracking.

  • General condition

A lively 55-year-old that still retains much of its original character and brings joy and nostalgia both on the road and at classic car gatherings. A fine representative of Volkswagen’s effort to introduce new models alongside the iconic Beetle. An all-around charming and enjoyable enthusiast’s car.

Facts about the model

With the introduction of the 1600 TL Touring Limousine in late 1965, Volkswagen launched what was considered the market’s first fastback in the family car segment. It was based on the Type 3 model, known as the Notchback, which had been introduced with great fanfare in 1961. Compared to the Beetle, it represented a major leap forward in many respects.
The new fastback did not enjoy immediate success, and its design was questioned in several ways. Over time, however, it gained a loyal following, and the coupé-inspired styling became increasingly popular. Today, many years later, it is regarded as a beautiful and elegantly styled car.
Already at launch, Volkswagen emphasized that the model offered generous space both front and rear, while the rear engine layout allowed room for both a larger engine and increased luggage capacity. In advertising, it was presented as the luxurious Volkswagen — combining attractive design with practical qualities, crowned by its two luggage compartments at the front and rear.
The engine was a 1,584 cc boxer unit with twin Solex carburetors producing 54 hp. For the 1967 model year, the Type 3 Fastback received integrated headrests as a standard safety feature. For 1968, the TLE version was introduced, where the “E” stood for Einspritzung (fuel injection). It featured an electronic fuel injection system from Bosch — the world’s first on a mass-produced car. That same year, a dual-circuit braking system was also introduced.
For the 1969 model year, a new rear axle with double-jointed driveshafts was fitted, significantly improving handling characteristics. Larger taillights were also introduced. For 1970, the model received new straight bumpers, larger indicators, and a longer, taller front end with increased luggage capacity. The final model year was 1973.
In Sweden, the 1600 TL/E came standard with an Eberspächer gasoline heater to provide improved winter warmth and comfort.
According to available figures, a total of 2,542,382 Volkswagen Type 3s were produced, of which 1,339,124 were Notchback/Fastback variants. In addition to Germany, the model was also manufactured in Brazil and Australia.
