"Volvo 1800E final-year model fitted with Volvo’s 4-cylinder B20E engine equipped with Bosch D-Jetronic fuel injection and a dual-circuit disc brake system front and rear. The car runs and drives well, making it a perfect classic summer cruiser."

Description

1972 Volvo 1800E Automatic originally sold new to Mr. Tanner in Phoenix, Arizona, at a purchase price of $5,015. The original sales invoice is still included, along with its first registration number, PAB-584. It appears Mr. Tanner owned the car until 2013, when it was sold and later ended up with a friend of the current owner in Florida, carrying registration IB5-207. The current owner then purchased the car, imported it to Sweden, and successfully registered it there in 2019.

The current owner is a true Volvo 1800 enthusiast, with several of his other cars having been borrowed and displayed by Volvo Heritage. He bought this particular car as a more usable, driver-focused example to enjoy during the summers. Over the past years it has only been driven approximately 100–200 km annually and has always been stored in a warm garage.

This owner knows the 1800E models inside out and specifically chose this example because of its exceptionally solid bodywork, rust-free condition, and honest original character. The car was repainted in the USA in 2013 due to sun fading and bleaching from the Arizona climate.

The interior remains original and complete, showing some age-related wear including dry cracks on the dashboard, faded front seats, and a few minor cracks in places, but it still presents in very usable condition and could easily be improved if desired.

Under the bonnet is a super clean and tidy engine bay housing the well-running B20E fuel-injected engine paired with the 3-speed Borg-Warner BW-35 automatic gearbox.

The car comes with a large history file including older paperwork from the USA along with more recent Swedish receipts and inspection reports. The recorded mileage on the import title in 2019 was 52,675 miles, which appears to support the car’s low-mileage.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition

Easily starts and only requires a few minutes of warm-up. The engine runs well with no strange noises, and the car is easy to drive thanks to the smooth automatic gearbox. It offers good road handling and solid brakes.

Recent work includes a review of the braking system, replacement of the brake servo, and the addition of wheel spacers, which can easily be removed if desired. The car was fitted with new Firestone tyres before being exported to Sweden, and they still have plenty of tread remaining today. The wheels were also repainted a few years ago.

Inspection-exempt and ready to drive, with only a routine oil service recommended.

  • Interior condition

Interior is clean and tidy with all its original features still in place. The front seats have become sun-bleached over time and are now darker in colour compared to the rear seat. Some cracks can be found on the front seats, mainly around the edges, and the driver’s seat has a stitched repair. The rear seat remains in good condition, although there is a small tear on the right rear side panel caused by folding the seat up and down over the years.

The plastic dashboard top is cracked, which is typical for cars that have spent time in sunny climates. Door panels, headliner, and carpets are all in a good, presentable condition, and the dashboard retains its original gauges and layout. The oil temperature gauge is not reading, although the engine maintains good oil pressure while driving, and the clock is not functioning. The radio works. The boot area is missing its carpet.

  • Exterior condition

This car presents itself well, and the best part is the solid, rust-free bodywork with straight panels throughout. The only notable issue is a small paint crack around the left rear light after the previous owner accidentally backed into a pole in the garage (see pictures). The passenger door could also benefit from a slight alignment adjustment inwards.

The underbody is clean and solid, with no signs of damage or rust. Going forward, a high-quality rust protection treatment is recommended to further preserve its condition. The paintwork remains glossy and well-presented following the respray carried out in 2013 to a good standard. There are a few minor cosmetic imperfections, but nothing of major significance. A transparent film is currently attached to the trunk lid to test the appearance of the paintwork, and the film can easily be removed if desired.

The chromework is very clean and bright throughout the car. The side trims fitted along the body are non-original rubber protection strips added during its time in the USA.

  • General condition

I totally understand why the owner bought the car — it is super solid, very presentable, and runs and drives well, making it a perfect summer driver. The interior could also be easily improved in the future, with many replacement parts and upgrade options readily available.
