"Hard to find anything to complain about. Possibly the brakes/hoses may need some attention."

Description

The current owner bought this beautiful Mercedes from the man in Skellefteå who had restored it to its present fine condition. He had previously restored several Pagodas and was therefore well aware of many of the pitfalls involved in the restoration of these cars, which he was able to avoid.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition

A start-up service and inspection of the brakes/brake hoses are needed after a long period of inactivity. The reverse lights are not working.

  • Interior condition

Very good condition. Minor damage to the vinyl on the top of the dashboard.

  • Exterior condition

A few minor paint imperfections/defects (some blisters). New soft top installed during the restoration.

  • General condition

Last inspected in 2002. A good car that became even better after the restoration. Since the restoration, it has only been driven a few miles. The Mercedes has been in Sweden since 1977. The car has only been test-driven in the parking lot outside the garage, so this should be taken into consideration when putting it back into use.

Facts about the model

Designed by the legendary Paul Bracq and based on the underpinnings of the “Fintail” models, the Pagoda — or W113 in Mercedes terminology — was a great success.

The engine was derived from the standard sedan version, and together with rear swing axles, it created a sports car that was significantly sportier than the previous SL generation. This was a modern, fast, and high-quality open two-seater.

During its production run from 1963 to 1971, several engine variants were introduced. The 230 SL was unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in 1963, and three years later, a five-speed gearbox became available as an option.

Production of the 250 SL began in December of the same year, and today it is considered the rarest Pagoda model. In 1967, a new hardtop body variant became available as an option, featuring two small rear seats instead of a soft top. The following year, the 250 was replaced by the 280 SL — which went on to become the most produced version.

Production of the Pagoda ended in 1971. In total, 48,912 units were built. Of these, 261 were sold new in Sweden. In the U.S., they came with fully red tail lights, different headlights, air conditioning, and a luggage shelf behind the seats instead of two small child seats.
