"An unusually well-preserved Jeep that works equally well as a rugged utility vehicle and as an enthusiast’s classic. It requires neither repairs nor servicing — simply turn the key and drive."

Description

This so-called “Klargöringsfordon” (“Readiness Vehicle”) was built in the USA in 1981 and registered in Sweden in August 1982. It was then assigned a military registration number for service with the Uppland Air Force Wing. In 2007, it was retired from military duty and registered for civilian use. After two private owners, the current owner acquired the vehicle in 2019.

The Jeep is in excellent usable condition and has been carefully maintained by an experienced and knowledgeable army technician. The current owner has fitted a modern fuel injection system, making the engine easy to start, smooth-running, and more fuel-efficient than the original setup. The vehicle is equipped with new Toyo tires, which provide a softer and quieter ride compared to the original military tires.

Also included with the vehicle is an interesting collection of original documentation in the form of a complete binder containing service and repair records. Winter tires with chains are included as well.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition

The vehicle starts easily and runs very well thanks to the modern fuel injection system. The automatic transmission, complete with high and low range as well as four-wheel drive, operates without issue. Army-installed towing attachments are fitted both at the front and rear.

  • Interior condition

The interior is original, featuring vinyl upholstery in honest, usable condition. There are some cracks in the upholstery — please refer to the photos. The roof lining is intact and clean, and the dashboard remains original, complete with mounts for weapons, radio equipment, and other military accessories.

  • Exterior condition

The vehicle has retained its original color and has been repainted/touched up using a roller, in keeping with its utilitarian character. The cargo bed has been coated with durable “Raptor” protective lining for added toughness. Overall, the presentation is very good for this type of rugged military vehicle. Please refer to the photos.

  • General condition

Good overall condition with low mileage, all essential functions working properly, and no significant rust issues.

Owner's comment

The car is very easy to drive and works well, but it is now time to try something different.

Facts about the model

The Jeep Gladiator (later known simply as the Jeep Pickup) was a full-size pickup truck based on the Jeep Wagoneer platform. It was produced between 1962 and 1988, and throughout those 26 years only minor mechanical changes were made. The model was offered with both inline-six and V8 gasoline engines, and was available in both two-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive configurations.

Approximately 450 Jeep J20s were imported to Sweden during 1981–1982 for use by the Swedish Air Force’s base battalions. These vehicles were used by aircraft servicing units for personnel transport and for towing trailers carrying maintenance and support equipment. Thanks to the towing attachment mounted at the front, the vehicles could also be used for maneuvering aircraft on the ground.

The vehicles were taken out of active service around 2006, with most of them placed into storage, although some were briefly returned to service in 2016. In the early 2020s, they were finally replaced in the readiness vehicle role by the Terrängbil 15.
