Description
Imported to Sweden in 2003, this Dodge has since been located in Torsby, Värmland, with two owners. The car was last inspected in 2018, and under Swedish veteran vehicle regulations, it is now tax-exempt and exempt from periodic inspections.
We were only able to conduct a limited test drive in an industrial area as the brakes require attention before the car can be driven on public roads. (See the technical section for more details.) We recommend both an exterior and interior detailing to enhance the car’s appearance. Reupholstering the seats would also give the car a significant boost. It appears that the car hasn’t been driven much in recent years, so a service inspection is also recommended. The car seems to be intact and not tampered with—everything is in its proper place. There is two ignition keys and working door locks. The car comes with a spare tire, a warning triangle, and a lug wrench. However, the original jack and owner’s manual are missing. The speedometer is calibrated in miles, and the total mileage is unknown.
The Dodge Royal was the brand’s top model, featuring the Hemi V8 engine. The first generation Royal was introduced in 1954, the same year Dodge debuted its first fully automatic transmission, the Powerflite. Despite being smaller than its corporate siblings’ engines, the Dodge Red Ram Hemi V8 still managed to break numerous speed records in 1954 at the Bonneville Salt Flats. (See more under history.)

Condition
-
Mechanical condition
Equipped with a Dodge Red Ram Hemi V8 engine at 241 cubic inches (4.0 liters) and a 2-speed Powerflite automatic transmission. The engine has a stated output of 150 hp. The car started easily, and after a short warm-up, we took it for a brief test drive. However, we couldn’t drive it extensively, as the brake pedal goes to the floor and pressure needs to be pumped up (see the video clip). The brakes must be repaired before the car is driven on public roads. During the short test drive of a few hundred meters, both the engine and transmission performed well. There is a small exhaust leak from a crack in the manifold, as seen in the picture.
The car’s electrical system has been converted to 12 volts and equipped with an alternator for increased reliability. The functionality of the charging gauge and fuel gauge is uncertain. -
Interior condition
The front bench seat and rear seat have been reupholstered with a vinyl-like material that is starting to lose its color. The headliner is in good condition, with some staining near the C-pillars. The speedometer is calibrated in miles. The floor of the trunk shows significant surface rust, as seen in the photos.
-
Exterior condition
The car has an older repaint that doesn’t meet modern standards, more of a practical respray. There are a few small rust bubbles at the lower edge of the front door and on the rear fender. The gaps around the right front door are slightly uneven. The windshield shows wear from the wiper blades. The car is fitted with good Maxxis tires in size 205/75-R15, giving it the correct height and stance. The bumpers have some damage in the form of dents, scratches, and surface rust spots. Some of the cast chrome parts have pitting. While we didn’t have the opportunity to lift the car, the visible parts of the underside appeared to be in good condition.
-
General condition
An early Hemi-equipped Dodge Royal in a wonderfully unpretentious, usable condition.
