Facts about the model
These were peppy, small, and economical cars produced in a wide range of body styles and trim levels, all reliable and well-liked. Already the A-model came in a two-door coupe version with flair and sporting ambitions. For the B-generation, a Rally Kadett was developed with a 1900 engine and 90 hp. It was all topped off by a Sprint version with dual carburetors and 106 hp. These cars also became purebred competition cars.
It all began in Sweden when Ragnar "Ragge" Eklund became head of Opel's competition department in Sweden in 1965. Initially, the Germans were not interested, but Opel in Sweden, through the dealer network, invested in the operation. Slowly but surely it developed, and success followed. The new, sharp 1900S engine was primarily intended for the larger Opel cars, which were perhaps not the best performers on the track. So why not put the engine in the smaller and more nimble Kadett, they reasoned in Sweden. The Germans had developed sport versions, but with a weak 1100 engine. No sooner said than done, a prototype was built here in Stockholm and taken down to Germany. And just like that, a classic was born! With the 1900S engine, the Rally Kadett became a serious car for its time. The engine produced 90 hp in untuned form. Attributes such as a black roof, auxiliary lights, wider wheels, and matte black stripes and panels were considered seriously cool. Prospective buyers could then purchase various equipment to put their own stamp on the car at their local Opel dealer. In addition, it received uprated springs and coil springs at the rear to match the power. During production of model years 1968-71, the model was developed further and a more powerful Sprint version with 106 hp was offered.
Naturally, a car with competition ambitions wasn't just for nice drives "around town." There was racing too, including here in Sweden. Victories came in both Group 1 and Group 2 in the early 70s. In the 1970 RAC Rally, the team also finished second, third, and fourth. The team included Swedes such as Bus-Ove Eriksson, Lillebror Nasenius, and Janne Henriksson.
When it was time for the next generation, the Kadett C of 1973-1979, Opel developed a GT/E version in the same spirit. Still with the 1900 engine, but now with fuel injection. They were initially painted in yellow and black and later white and yellow, at which point it was called the Rally 2,0E with a slightly larger engine. Once again there was competition driving and success in Group 1 and Group 2, including with Walter Röhrl as a driver in Opel's factory team. Opel Team Sweden also had success with its cars.
