"This car and its owner work in perfect harmony. It runs and drives extremely well and has always been kept in ready-to-drive condition, regularly enjoyed for the past 20 years. Sadly, age is now catching up with the owner, so the time has come for another enthusiast to take over and continue enjoying this special Saab."

Description

I have to start with the old saying, “Don’t judge a book by its cover.” The elderly owner and I set off around the local area looking for a good spot to photograph the car, and I was expecting a fairly slow and relaxed drive. To my surprise, it quickly turned into a very spirited drive, with the Saab being driven exactly as it was intended. That experience perfectly describes the relationship between the owner and his car — after almost 20 years together, they simply work in harmony.
First registered on 30 May 1963 to Count Stephan Tolstoy of Stockholm, this genuine Saab 96 Sport features the lively 841cc three-cylinder two-stroke engine with triple carburettors and separate oil lubrication. Power is delivered through a fully synchronized 4-speed manual gearbox with freewheel, while the Sport specification includes front disc brakes and rear drums. This particular car is also equipped with a Speedpilot trip meter and safety belts for classic car orienteering and navigation events.

The car comes with an extensive collection of older history and paperwork, including documents sourced from the Swedish State Archives. The current owner purchased the Saab around 20 years ago, following a previous owner who had kept it for approximately 23 years. During that earlier long-term ownership, the car underwent a renovation and repaint, believed to have been carried out in the late 1980s.

Throughout the current ownership, the Saab has been kept in ready-to-drive condition and regularly enjoyed during the summer months, including participation in classic car orienteering events. In 2020, the engine was renovated by Persson & Partners in Halmstad.

The Saab 96 Sport was introduced in 1962 as the successor to the GT750 and quickly became closely associated with Saab’s competition success. In 1966, the model evolved into the Monte Carlo 850, a name celebrating Erik Carlsson’s famous victories in the Monte Carlo Rally in 1962 and 1963. The later Monte Carlo V4 followed with Ford’s four-stroke V4 engine.

With its long-term ownership, documented history, renovated two-stroke engine and enthusiastic current owner, this is a properly used and enjoyed Saab Sport rather than simply a car that has sat in a collection.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition

The car starts directly and the engine runs well once given a few minutes to warm up properly. On the road, it feels responsive and lively, accompanied by that unmistakable two-stroke exhaust note. The handling feels sharp and balanced, the gearbox shifts smoothly and the brakes feel solid. The only point noted is that the handbrake requires adjustment.
The owner uses the separate oil lubrication system, making refuelling easier, and has fitted a discreet under-bonnet starter switch purely for convenience when working on the engine.
Fitted with original black steel wheels, good hubcaps and good tyres. Also included are a spare carburettor, additional hubcaps and extra lights — see photos. The car is inspection-exempt and ready for its next owner to drive and enjoy directly.

  • Interior condition

Blue interior presents in clean and generally good condition. The driver’s seat fabric panels show some wear in places, while the upper side panel on the passenger seat has some damage. The rear seat is in nice condition, and the passenger seat has been fitted with an additional headrest.

The door cards, interior panels, carpets and headliner are all in good condition. The dashboard also presents well, with some cracked paintwork around the glovebox area. The original gauges and instruments are present and working, complemented by a Speedpilot trip meter and an electric thermometer displaying both inside and outside temperatures.

  • Exterior condition

Bodywork is straight overall, with a small dent on the edge of the passenger-side front wing near the door. The lower edge of the passenger door has some paint touch-up, with a few small rust blisters showing through. There are also a few minor marks and paint touch-ups around the car — please see the detailed photos.

The underbody is clean and solid, with no notable rust issues to report. The paintwork is generally clean and bright, with some paint peeling around the inner frame of the boot lid. The chrome work remains bright and clean. The boot compartment is particularly nice, clean and solid, with no rust issues noted.

  • General condition

Charming car that runs and drives well and has clearly been well maintained and properly enjoyed over the past 20 years. There are a few minor cosmetic points that could easily be addressed over time, but nothing urgent. Overall, it is a very usable classic that is ready for its next owner to enjoy straight away
