Description
The current owner bought the car in 2021, and since then it has been looked after by an MG enthusiast and mechanic in Gothenburg. At some point, likely around 30 years ago, the car was renovated. This included a repaint, some minor welding to the sills and boot, updated interior trim, reupholstered seats, and extensive wax-oiling of the panels and doors.
Today the car still presents very well, with no major bodywork issues and a clean, tidy interior. Over the past three years, at least 30,000 SEK has been spent on mechanical work. In 2022 it passed its inspection at 37,941 km.
Overall, this car has hardly been used for the past 25+ years. The current owner has only taken it out for a few summer weekends each year and is now selling due to lack of time and use.
Technical data
Condition
-
Mechanical condition
Starts directly with some choke and needs to be warmed up properly. The engine runs well, and the car drives nicely with smooth gear changes, though the gearbox mounts likely needs replacing as there is a slight vibration. It handles well on the road with solid brakes, though the rear springs feel a little soft. It might also benefit from switching the current 15-inch tires back to the original 14-inch size. The rev counter could be made functional by reconnecting the wire, and the overdrive is currently not working.
The engine bay is clean and tidy, with only a little dampness around the brake servo, which would benefit from new gaskets. None of these points affect the driving experience—the car still feels lively and enjoyable on the road. -
Interior condition
Interior is clean and well kept, with no damage. Seats are in good condition, complemented by matching red carpets throughout and tidy red door cards. The dashboard retains its original gauges, all in working order apart from the rev counter mentioned earlier. A nice detail is the original and sought-after hexagon radio speaker (no radio included).
The soft top fits well and remains in good condition, as does the clip-on roof cover. Additional chrome sill kick plates add a tasteful finishing touch. -
Exterior condition
Bodywork is straight with no dents, damage, or major rust issues. The underbody is clean and solid, showing only some older signs of repair. The paintwork is bright and presentable, and would look even better with a standard polish. Minor flaws include a small scratch on the left wing, some blisters on the scuttle panel near the wipers, a few around the front wing edges, and one on the rear right wing (see pictures). The bonnet sits slightly proud along the top edge and would benefit from better alignment.
The car is fitted with a nice set of wire wheels, including a matching spare, all with newer tyres. The bootlid has chrome caps covering small holes, likely from a luggage rack that was once fitted. Chrome trim all around remains clean and bright, with only light oxidation visible on the bumpers. -
General condition
A fun early-model MGB full of charm, and one of the most sought-after versions thanks to its distinctive early details and features. No major work is required—just a few small fixes would make it an even finer example.
