"A car in truly top condition."

Beschreibung

This XK120 was ordered and delivered new to an individual whose name the factory chose not to disclose.

Barry Byford, who worked as a mechanic at Auberey-Finburgh (a well-regarded BMC workshop north of London), later acquired the car (year unknown), restored it, and specially equipped it to the specification we see today.

The engine has been upgraded to a 3.8-liter unit with a Mk2 block, fitted with Jaguar’s own “straight port head” (SP-head), featuring larger valves, improved ports, and more efficient combustion chambers. The result is better airflow, increased power, and higher torque—combined with a lighter construction than standard.

The chassis has been upgraded with adjustable dampers, while the steering benefits from a Mk2 “Lockheed” servo from the XK150, providing a far more precise and responsive feel. Disc brakes front and rear, also from the XK150, deliver more modern braking performance.

Inside, the car features period-correct bucket seats and a smaller leather steering wheel in classic racing style. Externally, it is fitted with bonnet louvers, a Monza fuel cap, Brooklands windscreens, and a period-style rear-view mirror—all in true competition spirit.

All work is meticulously documented in a handwritten binder by Barry Byford, including extensive technical information and MOT history dating back to 1983 (62,826 miles).

Fit and finish are exceptional, and the paintwork is of a very high standard.

For the purist, the original matching-numbers 3.4-liter engine is also included, fully rebuilt.

In summary: one of the last XK120s built, matching numbers, beautifully restored and upgraded with precision, fully documented (including the original “buff book” from 1954)—and an absolute joy to drive. Finished in Carmen Red with black leather and wire wheels, ready to be driven and enjoyed.

Fakten zum Modell

The Jaguar XK120 was launched in 1948 and marked a milestone in automotive history. It was first presented at the London Motor Show as a prototype to showcase Jaguar’s new engine—the inline six-cylinder XK engine. The designation “XK120” comes from both the engine and the car’s top speed of 120 mph (just over 190 km/h), making it the fastest production car in the world at the time.

The first series of XK120s was built with an aluminum body over a wooden frame. Later, production transitioned to steel bodies to meet the high demand. The car was offered in three body styles: Roadster (Open Two Seater), Fixed Head Coupé (FHC), and Drophead Coupé (DHC).

The XK120 was not only popular on the road but also successful in motorsport, competing in events such as Le Mans and many other notable races. Its design, engine, and strong performance for the era helped establish Jaguar’s reputation as a manufacturer of sporting and luxurious cars.

Production of the XK120 continued until 1954, when it was succeeded by the further developed XK140 and later the XK150.
