Beschreibung
The design itself was not entirely new. Opel had used a similar solution as early as 1935, when it began producing cabrio-coach models based on the Opel Olympia.
This particular BMW 3 Series Cabriolet was first registered on 16 June 1986. According to the Swedish Transport Agency, the car has had 11 owners from new, with the current owner having owned it since 2011. In recent years, it has only been used during the summer months and has been stored in an unheated garage during winter.
The owner has now decided to sell the car due to advancing age. It is fitted with BBS alloy wheels, and a cover for the folded rear soft top is included. The car also comes with a spare wheel, jack and original tool kit. Two ignition keys are included.

Beurteilung Fahrzeugzustand

Zustand technisch
Equipped with a 2.0-litre inline six-cylinder engine producing a stated 125 hp, together with a five-speed manual gearbox and rear-wheel drive.
During a very short test drive, we noted a knocking noise from the engine. The cause is unknown, and the noise neither increased nor decreased significantly while driving. There is also an exhaust leak at the front of the engine, apparently from the exhaust manifold or front exhaust pipe. Both noises can be clearly heard in the video.
As a precaution, we therefore chose not to carry out a longer test drive. We found no information regarding the most recent timing-belt replacement.
The car has also shown a tendency to lose electrical power, and we suspect that the alternator may be the cause. The charging warning light glows very faintly while driving. -
Zustand Interieur
Normal wear for the mileage. The driver’s seat shows heavier wear, including a hole in the outer edge of the backrest. The dashboard is complete and in good condition.
The cabin fan is not working. The windscreen wipers do not return automatically to their resting position when switched off. The radio is fitted, but its function is uncertain.
The rear seat is covered, and we have not inspected the condition of the upholstery underneath. The interior has a noticeable smell of horse stable. Professional interior cleaning will be required to remove the odour, and we therefore advise against the car for buyers with allergy problems.
The luggage compartment is tidy. -
Zustand Exterieur
The convertible roof and targa panel are in very good condition. Both were replaced approximately seven years ago.
The paintwork is beginning to look dull and would benefit from professional detailing to restore its shine. The left front wing has a dent, but the body is otherwise straight and free from any significant damage.
There is a rust-damaged area on the left-hand side at the rear, beneath the bumper. Surface rust is also present around the rear wheel arches, among other areas, together with rust blisters on the right-hand door. The underside shows the level of surface rust normally expected on an older car that has not received regular rustproofing treatment.
The tyres are older but have good tread depth. Please study the photographs for further information about the car’s condition. -

Fakten zum Modell
Baur became particularly well known for its patented open-top design. During the 1970s and 1980s, increasingly strict safety requirements were being discussed, especially in the American market, where there were concerns that traditional convertibles without rollover protection might be banned because of the risk of injury if the car overturned in an accident.
Baur addressed this by retaining the car’s side frames, door pillars and window surrounds, while fitting a strong fixed rollover bar across the centre of the body. This made the structure stronger than that of a traditional convertible. Baur called the design the Topcabriolet, abbreviated TC.
Following financial difficulties, Baur was acquired in 1999 by the German engineering company IVM Automotive.
