"This will get the fingers tingling for all Volvo enthusiasts. It only takes a few hours of leisure tinkering to get the car running even better. We recommend restoring the Nivomatique suspension, replacing the engine's rear main seal, fitting new tyres and applying rust protection treatment. The cherry on top would be a refrigerant top-up for the air conditioning. Then the car will be a fully capable executive saloon. Recently inspected by the Swedish Motor Authority and approved for traffic until 31 July 2028."

Beschreibung

Cool and unusual Volvo 960 that was largely hand-built at Nilsson's coachworks in Laholm. The car was lengthened for better rear seat space. Since new, the car has had nine owners, including car dealers and the current owner who has owned it for 15 years. He is a keen Volvo enthusiast and purchased the car spontaneously in 2011 because it was in such fine condition. Since 2014 it has been stored in his garage and only started and driven to warm it up once or twice a year. It was last polished in 2014 when it was put away and remains in good condition. An interior reconditioning and exterior waxing, including engine cleaning, would take the car to the next level. The owner no longer has space to store the car and has therefore brought it out, gone through the brakes, replaced the cambelt and engine oil, and had it inspected. So now it is ready for the next enthusiast. We recommend that the buyer restores the Nivomatic shock absorbers and tops up the air conditioning system. With these measures and also a change to new tyres, the car will once again live up to its reputation as a comfortable long-distance tourer. We do not know who ordered the car new, but with a bit of luck the buyer can research this via the National Archives. According to accompanying documents, the tow bar was fitted in 2000. The documents also show that the car was registered for taxi use for a period. The tow bar beam is rusty, so the buyer should remove it, grit-blast and paint it, then refit it. Alternatively remove it entirely. The underside of the car shows surface rust and the current owner has treated the rear axle with linseed oil to protect against further rust. The car comes with a spare wheel, instruction book and a number of inspection reports. Also included loose are the original springs replaced by the Nivomatic.

Beurteilung Fahrzeugzustand

  • Zustand technisch

Equipped with Volvo's fine straight-six three-litre engine producing 204 hp and a four-speed automatic gearbox. Cambelt replacement was carried out on 5 June 2026, at 32,963 km. At the same time, engine oil and filter were changed. Prior to inspection, the brakes were serviced with new brake pads all round. The air conditioning needs to be recharged with refrigerant; when tested, the compressor cycles on and off alternately, a sign that there is still some gas present, but not enough. Starts easily and runs smoothly. The car has been stored in a garage for many years without use. When it was brought out in spring 2026, it was found that the rear dampers, Nivomatic, had leaked and needed to be replaced. In order to enable the car to pass inspection and be used, the owner instead fitted reinforced coil springs from a Volvo 240 and Bilstein dampers at the rear. This works, but the car has become rather too bumpy when driving on country roads. These should be replaced with new Nivomatic dampers to restore the smooth, floating comfort for which the 960 Executive is renowned. The original coil springs are included. The tyres are old with radial cracks and have developed flat spots, so these must also be replaced for optimal safety and comfort. The engine's rear oil seal, at the crankshaft towards the flywheel, leaks slightly when the car is stationary, and the owner has therefore fitted a special plate underneath with an absorbent cloth to prevent stains on the garage floor. In the medium term, the oil seal should therefore be replaced.

  • Zustand Interieur

Well-maintained interior in good condition. The driver's seat backrest shows wear and a small hole at the edge near the driver's door. Smart instrument panel without cracks. The headliner has come loose from the adhesive in a few places, but gives a good overall impression. The centre console on the Executive is equipped with a cup holder, two holders forward and two holders rear. The 1990s was a period when ashtrays were considered a necessary accessory in executive cars, so such are found in the rear door panels. There is, however, no sign that the car has been smoked in. On the right rear side, a conference table with hardwood inlay can be folded out from the front seat backrest. See the pictures. In the boot there is a small minibar cooler that is activated from the driver's position. What can be noted in the boot room is the soiled textile carpet.

  • Zustand Exterieur

The car was completely repainted at some point during the 2000s after a vandal had scratched the sides with a sharp object. The paint has held up well. There are some paint blisters along the right roof edge/drip rail and on the right rear fender. There are also some crazing in the paint on the C-pillars up towards the roof. Around the mobile phone antenna on the roof there are rust blisters. Overall, the car is unusually fine for the model. The bodywork manufacturer that built these new had documented quality problems, and this is one of the better restored examples we have seen, taking into account the mileage and its use as a work vehicle. It is not in mint condition, but in good working order. The undercarriage has normal surface rust for the car model and requires a rust protection inspection.

See the images for more information about the car's condition.

  • Zustand gesamt

960 Executive in unusually good working condition. Has minor observations and requires some work to become even better. Fully functional in its current condition.

Fakten zum Modell

The car in question was built by the then Yngve Nilsson Karosseri AB in Laholm. For several decades, the Laholm company functioned as an official subcontractor to Volvo, building their ambulances and limousines. When Ford acquired Volvo Personvagnar in 1999, the strategy changed. In 2000, Volvo terminated its collaboration with external coachbuilders. Losing its role as exclusive subcontractor dealt a severe blow to the factory's order books. The company attempted to transition to selling directly to end customers, but the financial strain proved too great.

Quality issues and extremely costly claims due to rust were also a decisive factor that broke the finances of Yngve Nilsson Karosseri AB. When the company extended vehicles (primarily the Volvo 900 series and early V70), the bodies were cut in half. New sheet metal sections were welded in to lengthen the cars. The production methods and inadequate finishing of the welds at the joints did not hold up over time. The problem affected limousines, hearses and ambulances alike. Particularly the ambulances suffered rapid rust problems. Moisture and road salt penetrated the modified beams and joints. After a few years in service, ambulances throughout Sweden began suffering severe, structural rust attacks at the joints. Since the vehicles had been in operation for a relatively short time and purchased for millions by the regional health authorities, claims poured in steadily. Having to bring rolling ambulances into the factory, cut them open again, address the rust and redo the work became an economic disaster. The costs of warranty repairs and legal disputes over claims consumed all capital, which together with the lost Volvo contract made bankruptcy inevitable in 2003.

Already the year after the bankruptcy, in 2004, the business and the bankrupt estate were acquired by new owners. The operation was restructured and restarted under the new name Nilsson Special Vehicles.

When the new company, Nilsson Special Vehicles, took over in 2004, their paramount task was to rebuild market confidence. They solved the rust problem by completely redesigning the production line. Today, the extended modules and roof for the ambulances are built largely from carbon fiber and advanced composite materials instead of welded sheet steel. This eliminates the risk of rust at the joints. Cars that are still extended with steel or aluminium undergo extremely strict rust protection processes approved directly by Volvo's own quality engineers.
