"This car is a delightful Italian Gran Turismo from the era of lightweight, spirited sports cars at the turn of the 1950s and 1960s. Naturally finished in its classic Rosso AR 501 red with a tasteful black interior and red carpets. The ownership history is well documented, and the car is presented in good, road-ready condition, with only a few minor details that would benefit from attention."

Beschreibung

According to the Alfa Romeo Historical Archive, the car was built on 11 April 1962. On 25 October of the same year, it was type-approved by Alfa Romeo’s Swedish importer, Gjestvang and Co., which had recently taken over the brand’s distribution in Sweden from Joakim Bonnier as he shifted his full focus to his racing career. The first owner took delivery of the car from Gjestvang on 1 November 1962.

Copies from the Swedish vehicle register document the first four owners. Following the national registration reform, the car had just two additional owners, who kept it for 23 and 25 years respectively. During the 1990s, the car spent several years stored in a garage. The current owner, an Alfa Romeo enthusiast, eventually contacted the then-owner and, after some negotiation, acquired the car on 20 March 2001.

Since then, the current owner has carried out routine servicing himself. The car has been used exclusively for enthusiast driving and has always been garage-kept, sharing its space for many years with a 1973 Bertone Coupé.

Over the years, the following work and upgrades have been carried out:

The exhaust manifolds were media blasted and aluminium arc-sprayed by Eskilstuna Blästringsteknik.
An alternator has been fitted, while the original functioning dynamo is included with the car.
The original carburettor has been replaced with an Italian-made Weber 36 DCD, professionally rebuilt and calibrated by Classic Carbs in England. The original functioning Solex 32 PAIA carburettor is also included.
The ignition system has been upgraded to a maintenance-free 123 Ignition electronic system.
A handling kit from Classic Alfa (UK) has been installed, comprising uprated springs, a thicker anti-roll bar, and Koni shock absorbers on all four corners.
The rear axle mounting points for the trailing arms have been reinforced.
In addition to the fitted 5x15 alloy wheels, the original steel wheels, including the spare wheel, are included.
The front brakes have been rebuilt with new wheel cylinders (three per wheel) and original riveted brake linings. The brake system now uses silicone brake fluid.
The driver's seat was refurbished by Tuck Shop Bilsadelmakeri in Uppsala, which repaired the worn seat base and restored damage to both front seats.

The car is accompanied by its original owner's manual, a binder containing historical documents and receipts, as well as various books and workshop manuals. These records reveal, among other things, that the car was repainted in the late 1970s and indicate that the actual mileage is likely around 115,470 km, together with a wealth of additional historical information.

The car is covered by Swedish MHRF classic vehicle insurance, has a valid inspection certificate, and is ready to be enjoyed on the road.

Beurteilung Fahrzeugzustand

  • Zustand technisch

The engine started easily after a short period with the choke engaged and soon settled into a smooth idle. During a brief test drive, the car felt lively and engaging, delivering the characteristic driving pleasure expected of the model. The steering was precise, while the clutch and gearbox worked well together. Braking performance was good, although the car pulled slightly to the left under braking and would benefit from adjustment.

The radiator drain tap was found to be inoperative. The engine bay is clean, dry, and well presented, showcasing an elegant and tidy power unit.

The car was not inspected on a lift, but it was raised on front wheel ramps to allow a partial underbody inspection. The visible areas appeared to be in good condition, and the car has been rustproofed at some point in its life, although the exact date of the treatment is unknown.

  • Zustand Interieur

The interior is well preserved and retains its original character, with a number of details having been sympathetically restored. The seats remain comfortable, while the door cards, trim panels, headliner, and carpets are all presented in good condition. The headliner shows some minor discolouration, and the original textile front floor mats are no longer present, having been replaced with protective rubber mats.

The charming wood-rimmed Nardi steering wheel displays an attractive level of period patina and is believed to be an original 1960s accessory. The switchgear, dashboard, and instruments are generally in good condition, although a few faults remain: the oil temperature and fuel level gauges are inoperative, the cabin heater fan is missing, the turn signal stalk does not self-cancel after left turns, and the windscreen washer is not functioning. An older radio is fitted but is not connected.

The car was previously equipped with period floor-mounted seat belts, which have since been removed. A lap belt is currently fitted for the driver.

  • Zustand Exterieur

The car presents with a glossy finish in its original factory colour. It was repainted approximately 50 years ago by Ingarö Lack on Norrbackagatan in Stockholm and has aged remarkably well. The exterior displays only the expected minor signs of use consistent with its age and mileage. The chrome trim, mouldings, badges, glass, and lighting components are all in similarly well-preserved condition. The brightwork on the lower section of the driver's side grille shows some slight discolouration.

The car is fitted with attractive aluminium alloy wheels wearing Michelin XZX tyres with good remaining tread depth, although the tyres are now more than 20 years old and should be considered accordingly.

Both the engine bay and luggage compartment are clean and well preserved. The bonnet is missing its sound insulation, and the current owner has fabricated a practical support stay for the boot lid.

  • Zustand gesamt

An elegant and highly desirable Alfa Romeo coupé that perfectly captures the spirit of the late 1950s and early 1960s. With the introduction of the Giulia series, the model benefited from more advanced engineering, and by this model year the lively 1.6-litre engine had become standard. Responsive and rewarding to drive, it remains one of the standout Italian sports cars of its era.

Presented in this well-maintained, highly usable condition and enhanced with carefully considered technical upgrades, the car offers an exceptional classic driving experience while retaining the qualities that make it a genuine collector's piece and a true enthusiast's car.

Fakten zum Modell

The Alfa Romeo Giulietta was produced between 1954 and 1964. Its name is widely believed to be a reference to Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. The model was offered in several body styles, including the four-door Berlina saloon, the open-top Spider, and the two-door Sprint coupé. A number of special variants were also produced, most notably the Sprint Speciale and the Sprint Zagato.

The Sprint Coupé was designed by a young Nuccio Bertone, whose elegant styling quickly earned widespread acclaim. It proved to be one of the most attractive Italian sports cars of its day, with a total of 27,100 examples built between 1954 and 1962. From 1956, buyers could also choose the more powerful Sprint Veloce version.

In 1962, the model was updated and renamed the Giulia Sprint, with production continuing until 1965. These cars received the 1.6-litre twin-cam engine as standard, while still belonging to the original Tipo 101 Giulietta series. Other technical improvements included a five-speed gearbox and a redesigned front suspension. From 1963 onwards, however, the 1.3-litre engine was reintroduced to avoid competing directly with the newly launched Giulia Sprint GT. According to production records, approximately 9,000 Sprint Coupés in various specifications were built between 1962 and 1965.
