It’s back – the record-setting Volvo from 2020!
When this exceptionally fine 740 Turbo sold for SEK 280,000 at auction, the price was believed to be the highest ever paid for the model.
Could a new record be set when the car once again goes under the hammer at Bilweb Auctions?
Since purchasing the car in 2020, the current owner has driven it just 450 kilometres, and the odometer now reads 58,750 kilometres. Despite the limited mileage, he has invested in a new original exhaust system, new Michelin Pilot Sport tyres, a paint treatment and a service using original parts, including replacement of the timing belt.
Otherwise, the saloon remains in the same near-new condition that sparked such intense bidding six years ago. The car was sold new by Rejmes in Halmstad and received its warranty service at 2,750 kilometres, but after that the service book remained unstamped.
The explanation is that the original owner ran a contracting business with a fully equipped workshop and therefore carried out all servicing himself – apparently with great care and attention.
This 740 Turbo also carries the additional “+” designation. This referred to a performance upgrade offered by Volvo, adding approximately 20–25 horsepower to the original 165 hp produced by the 2.3-litre four-cylinder engine.
Our inspector Peter Sundfeldt wrote the following in the vehicle description back in 2020:
“Typically, when it comes to older everyday cars, it is often the high-performance versions and the low-mileage examples that are the most desirable. This car combines both of those qualities.”
Add its extraordinary condition to the equation, and perhaps that high auction price was not such a surprise after all.
“It will be very exciting to see what the six years that have passed have meant for the market’s interest in the car,” says Pontus Bärnarp, CEO of Bilweb Auctions.
“We have estimated the market value at between SEK 290,000 and SEK 320,000, but at the same time, all it takes is two or three determined bidders for the price to climb significantly. That is the nature of an auction.”
The auction ends on September 9.
