When Lars Hägg in Gothenburg bought his new BMW 2002 Tii in November 1971, he was proud – but not satisfied. Even though the original 131 horsepower gave the small sedan sports-car performance, he wanted more.
So after just six months, the car was sent back to Germany to Schnitzer, a company competing with Alpina in building BMWs for the racetrack – but which also offered pure tuning for road cars. The Agave Green Tii spent time at Schnitzer in both 1972 and 1973 for advanced tuning and modifications. The result: an exceptional car that likely has no equal. The upgrades involved far more than just engine performance, but if we focus on that, the result was around 165 horsepower. And we should remember that the legendary 2002 Turbo had only about 10 horsepower more.
The two most recent owners have spent 20 years systematically searching for new original parts in both Sweden and Germany, parts that can no longer be found. In 2010 it also received new paint, followed by a three-year reassembly of new and old components, carried out by specialist workshops.
At first glance, this BMW 2002 appears largely original, like a slightly sporty family car from the 1970s. No widened wheel arches, all trim pieces intact, and the interior is original except for three auxiliary gauges and a sports steering wheel (the original is included).
There is very little that reveals its capabilities – which only adds to its appeal. A “sleeper” before the term even existed.
Now that it is for sale, the “Schnitzer” is in excellent condition, mechanically and cosmetically restored by skilled professionals and a collector’s item that draws attention in the BMW world.
It is currently valued in the range of 750,000 – 850,000 SEK. The auction ends on November 27.
