Exquisite 1952 Mercedes 220 B convertible on Bilweb Auctions - a 45 year long restoration

A Mercedes convertible from the early 1950:s is one of the gems in the new listing from Bilweb Auctions. It took the seller 45 years to restore this 220 B to the outstanding condition it is in today.

In 1976 a young Swedish man bought a car from his year of birth - 1952. Not a particularly old car at the time, but nevertheless the elegant Mercedes convertible turned out to be in need of a thorough restoration, especially the body.

It was sold new in Sweden, deregistered in the 1960:s but taken back in active duty in 1969.

The young man realized that he would’t be able to do the restoration of the body work and chassis himself and chose to concentrate on studies, career and family.

However, in the 1980:s the engine, rear axle and gearbox was restored before another long brake in the resurrection of the Mercedes convertible was taken.

In 2014 the owner, now significantly older, found an extremely skilled sheet metal worker that was willing to take on the project, attracted by the challenge. Together they made numerous trips around Sweden in order to look at other 220 B convertibles, taking measures and finding out about the correct pressings, for example in the floor.

Enthusiasts around Europe provided support and advice, making it possible to reach to goal in 2021 - after 45 years, thousands of hours and a significant amount of money.

Now this life’s work is for sale on Bilweb Auctions and it is a car in an outstanding condition that is valued at between 1,1 and 1,3 million SEK.

The car is in an absolute original state and it is clearly notable the very skilled craftsmen has been involved in all details. The owner has, however, have had the wisdom to keep the leather interior once made in the Mercedes workshop in Sindelfingen. It has a superb patina that a newly made upholstery never can provide.

997 Mercedes 220 B was made during 1951 - 1955 and on 26 October on of the finest survivors goes under the digital hammer.
