One-of-a-Kind SAAB Up for Auction!

Factory-new Saab 9-4X. Yes, truly new: Only 469 kilometers. Chassis number 1. 814 built. – We could almost stop right there, couldn’t we?

It’s easy to start piling up clichés when a car like this appears. The facts above really say it all.

But alright, let’s build the story a little further.

In November 2010, a troubled Saab unveiled its new SUV, the 9-4X, at the Los Angeles Auto Show. It shared most of its technology with its GM cousin, the Cadillac SRX, and was to be built at the Ramos Arizpe factory in Mexico. The goal was clear — to compete with the likes of Volvo’s runaway success, the XC60.

Production began in February the following year, and the very first of the series-produced cars was this one — our auction car. Chassis number 1. Equipped with the larger engine option, a 3-liter V6 producing 265 horsepower.

Ten months later, Saab Automobile went bankrupt, and only 814 units of the 9-4X had been built. Chassis number 1 was never sold to a customer and had by then returned home to Sweden.

At a bankruptcy auction in 2013, it was sold bearing a small plaque in the engine bay reading “Sold at Saab bankruptcy collectible auction 2013” — still in place today. At that point, the car had only been pre-registered, and the actual registration inspection wasn’t carried out until 2022.

Condition? Just like new. Read our inspector Shaun Major’s enthusiastic description, and you’ll understand. The car has been gently stored in a heated garage by its Saab-enthusiast owner, who has also started it up regularly.

This 9-4X is a unique example of one of Saab’s rarest models — Swedish industrial history built in Mexico.

Bilweb Auctions has valued it between SEK 450,000 and 500,000. The auction closes on October 30.
