The Peugeot 504 coupe is one of the French carmaker´s most elegant models, designed by the Italian master Sergio Pininfarina. Now one of few Swedish 504 coupes is up for bidding at Bilweb Auctions, moreover with the bigger 2,7 litre V6.
The 504, launched in 1968 as a sedan, is Peugeot’s biggest success with 3,7 million cars produced. Already in 1969 a coupe and a convertible was presented, but with a production set-up so complicated that it became very expensive.
In Sweden, the importer Gjestvangs initially refused to sell it due to the high price, but finally gave in.
In the early 1970s a 504 coupe cost 40 000 SEK in Sweden, while an Opel Commodore GS coupe stopped at 30 000.
The 504 coupe that now is on the first Bilweb Auction listing for August is, however, originally sold in Germany. It has the 144 horse power V6 that was a result of a cooperation between Peugeot, Renault and Volvo, the so called PRV Six, that made its debut in the Volvo 264.
In the auction car, it is mated to a manual 5-speed gearbox.
This coupe is a Series 3 that arrived in 1980 and is recognizable on the plastic fenders in the car´s body color and a new grille.
The car came to Sweden in 2016 and received a full repaint three years ago in the original color Pale Green metallic. The interior is in a very periodical brown velour that has managed to cope with its 40 years almost without wear.
Even if a 504 coupe is a pretty rare car today - only 23 000 were made between 1969 and 1983 - it is easy to maintain since it builds upon a well-tried and mass produced model. Spare parts are plentiful.
A 504 coupe should be seen as a comfortable car for long trips, with plenty of room for luggage. Maybe for a trip to its home country?
Tore Thallaug, Peugeot connaisseur, valuer at Bilweb Auctions and owner of a 1973 504 coupe, describes the car like this: ”A combination of Italian design and French mechanics and finesse”.
The car in the auction is valued at between 170 000 and 200 000 SEK. The bidding closes on 3 August.
