Sweden’s Most Common Police Car
During the 1980s, the Saab 900 was one of the most common police cars in Sweden. When the vehicles had completed their service with the police force, they were stripped of all equipment and sold second-hand to the public. The Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) handled the decommissioning of the vehicles, and they were sold through the government surplus company Överskottsbolaget. Most of them were heavily worn and bought as cheap daily drivers. Within just a few years, most ended up at the scrapyard. As a result, virtually no Saab 900 police cars have been preserved today.
This car is an exception. It was originally delivered to the Police Academy in Sörentorp, Solna, where it remained for eight years before being decommissioned. It was then purchased by an elderly lady who drove her former police car gently and carefully. After passing through the hands of a few more female owners, the car was bought in 2020 by a car enthusiast in Värmland. He began the painstaking work of tracking down original police equipment to restore the Saab to its authentic patrol car condition.
Restoration Completed in 2021
When the car was completed in 2021, it won awards at several exhibitions and received significant local attention. In 2023, the car was auctioned on Bilweb Auctions, and the interest within the Saab community absolutely exploded. Several international online magazines wrote about the car, and it also gained attention on social media. Still, few realized just how rare the car truly was. The final auction price in 2023 was a modest 125,000 SEK. Since then, the car has participated in several classic car events and has been further featured in the motoring press.
Escorted the King in 2025
In 2025, the car took part in the Swedish Royal Rally (Kungsrallyt) on the island of Öland, where it had the honor of escorting the King and Queen during part of the rally route. The same year, the car was featured on the cover of the new book about Saab police cars, in which it also has its own dedicated chapter.
Auctioned Again – Is the Car Leaving Sweden?
The current owner, who acquired the car in 2023, feels unable to store and preserve the vehicle as it deserves. The car is therefore once again up for auction and is attracting great attention among European car collectors. So the question remains – will this fascinating and unique piece of Swedish cultural heritage leave the country?
Don’t worry – you still have the chance to bid on the police car.
The auction ends on Thursday, October 9, 2025, at 10:10 AM.
